JPEGMAFIA: Rap’s dark web troll

Ryan Israel | Friday, September 20, 2019

JPEGMAFIA wants you to be disappointed — or, at least, that’s what he’s been saying.  Disappointment was the main message of the Maryland rapper’s promotion for his new album, “All My Heroes Are Cornballs,” released last week. He dropped YouTube videos of his music friends expressing their dismay after preview listens to the project with

‘Safe In the Hands of Love’ is a genre-less, experimental masterwork

Patrick Witteman | Tuesday, September 25, 2018

Yves Tumor is hard to pin down. The Tennessee artist rarely gives interviews and has gone by pseudonyms of Rahel Ali and Sean Bowie throughout his career. Tumor’s elusiveness is a perfect descriptor for his album “Safe In the Hands of Love.” The experimental project jumps between genres as quickly as it jumps between the

What is Death Grips?

Owen Lane | Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Over the past several years, Death Grips has been slowly seeping into mainstream culture. Their song “No Love” provided a fitting soundtrack for the titular character’s drug binge in a 2014 episode of “BoJack Horseman.” In the “Atlanta” Season 2 premiere, the character Darius blares the 2016 Death Grips track “Hot Head” on his car

To tell the truth, this could be the last time: Scene-ior Selections

John Darr, Erin McAuliffe, Jack Riedy, Kelly McGarry and Jimmy Kemper | Wednesday, May 3, 2017

No matter what the denizens of Scene past will tell you, the class of 2017 is a special one. Notoriously banned for writing music reviews during their freshman year in an attempt to publish articles on someone besides Kanye West, this year’s Scene-iors are perhaps the most in-tune in the section’s history. They can be

Scene’s Best Albums of 2016

Jimmy Kemper, Erin McAuliffe, John Darr, Kelly McGarry, Christian Bunker, Adrian Mark Lore, Brian Boylen, Adam Ramos, Mike Donovan, Jack Riedy and Maggie Walsh | Wednesday, December 7, 2016

A Tribe Called Quest — “We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service” By Adrian Mark Lore Suffice it to say that 2016 was a turbulent year, both domestically and internationally. For the music industry, it was a year of sad departures — the death of legends like David Bowie and Leonard Cohen— as well

Five summer ‘16 hip-hop releases you might have missed

Adam Ramos | Monday, August 22, 2016

While monumental, the character assassination of Tay Swift was far from the only happening in the music industry this summer. Even if you had been diligently following the summer’s steady stream of terrific hip-hop projects, including albums from Chance The Rapper, ScHoolboy Q, Vic Mensa and Gucci Mane, you still might have missed a handful

SUB Concert Predictions

Erin McAuliffe, Maddie Daly, Matthew Munhall, John Darr, Jimmy Kemper and Miko Malabute | Monday, April 20, 2015

With just eight class days left in the semester, now seems like a perfect time for the Student Union Board to announce its annual spring concert. Current rumors range from Jesse McCartney to Viper the Rapper, so there is bound to be something great up SUB’s sleeves for us. Still, the Scene staff is

‘The Powers that B’ Review

John Darr | Wednesday, March 25, 2015

It’s 6:19 p.m., and I’m in my dark, cramped, single dorm room with clothes all over the floor; I’m out of Nutter Butters. I got two hours of sleep last night. I have a six-page paper I haven’t started due tomorrow. I have to find a date for Saturday’s dance. My last yak didn’t do

Re-start 2015 with a bang(er)

John Darr | Wednesday, February 4, 2015

It’s a new year, sort of. The thrill of a new digit at the end of the day’s date has worn off, no one’s talking about how crazy New Year’s Eve was anymore, the best-of-2014 lists have dropped out of conversation and with little more than a fantastic Björk record to talk about, music nerds

Death Grips Lives On

Thom Behrens | Thursday, January 15, 2015

Stephan Burnett and Zach Hill had been trailblazing the brave genre of experimental hip-hop since their formation of Death Grips in 2010. In the past four years, they have gained notoriety for their bold musical statements. On recordings, the rhythmically complex accompaniments they develop feature intricately woven use of drums, various synthetic percussion sounds, and

Each day our student journalists, editors, reporters, photographers and designers work hard to report on the things you care about. From tri-campus events to movie reviews, letters to the editor and sports predictions, we give a platform to numerous voices waiting to be heard.

Even throughout the pandemic, our staff has continued publishing articles, letters, columns, reviews and sharing our content with you on social media.

Just recently The Observer won first place in online publication of the year at the Indiana Collegiate Press Association Awards, proving that our hard work and dedication pays off.

As a student-run organization, we juggle the same responsibilities as our peers, while remaining committed to informing the public out of our love for the tri-campus community. This ND Day, we hope that you would consider making a donation to support our student journalists.

Irish head coach Mike Johnson said, “I give our kids credit. I thought we competed hard … It’s not how we wanted it to end of course, but I can’t say enough about our players, about the people that they are, about the sacrifices they’ve made. I just have the greatest love and appreciation for them.”

It made me wonder if they saw the same movie I had watched, where a strong independent woman suddenly meets a man and willingly follows his every order, even though she’s a grade A baddie all on her own.”
