Take off your rose-tinted glasses

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, April 13, 2021

On January 20, 2021, the people of the United States of America and the rest of the world once again witnessed one of the hallmarks of this country’s democracy, as outgoing President Trump and incoming President Biden engaged in a peaceful transfer of power, a lasting American tradition that is envied by millions around the

Learning civility from ‘Parks and Rec’

Nia Sylva | Friday, October 9, 2020

The state of bipartisan political relations in this country is dire, to say the very least. Anyone who had the pleasure of witnessing last week’s mudslinging presidential debate knows that to be true. The disrespect that tends to abound in the public sphere — between the men and women who are supposed to be working

Primary colors: An aesthetic study of the 2020 Democrats

Jim Moster | Wednesday, March 4, 2020

Behind every work of art hides an artist, a method and a motive. For example, Vincent van Gogh painted “Starry Night” using oil on canvas in order to … well, to what? Wikipedia suggests he wanted to capture the beauty outside his asylum room’s window. Sorry, Wikipedia, but motives are inherently opaque. Even van Gogh

Asking questions, encouraging meaningful discussion

Andrew Sveda | Monday, January 27, 2020

“So, do you like Trump?” It’s an innocent question (hopefully). A fair one, too. But for years, it’s bothered me. And it’s not that I don’t like politics or think we should ignore the elephant in the room. Quite the opposite. It’s because it’s — obviously — a tremendously loaded question. Answer wrong and pay

A presidential debate at ND – oh, the irony

Jackie O'Brien | Thursday, January 16, 2020

Last year, it was announced that Notre Dame would be hosting a presidential debate next September. In the announcement, University President Fr. John Jenkins addressed the importance of democratic discourse and informing voters through debate and dialogue. “The heart of democracy is addressing significant questions in open, reasoned discussion that will inform voters as they

What political polarization means for the 2020 election

BridgeND | Thursday, November 14, 2019

“Political polarization” is a term that is often thrown around in the media and news. By definition, political polarization is the “divergence of political attitudes and ideas to the ideological extreme.” Polarization is the idea of “us” and “them,” and this ideology can and does cause confusion and tension between those with differing views. The cost of winning

Jackie O'Brien | Wednesday, April 10, 2019

This past week, former President Barack Obama, at a town hall in Berlin, made a statement warning Democrats to be wary of ideological rigidity in the upcoming presidential election. “One of the things I do worry about sometimes among progressives in the United States — maybe it’s true here as well — is a certain

Will this shutdown end?

Jin Kim | Monday, January 21, 2019

Even if you’ve tried to block out the horror that is the news cycle, you must’ve heard by now: the United States federal government is shut down. To be completely accurate, the latest shutdown is a partialshutdown — 75 percent of the government remains open and has been funded through September 2019. But the remaining 25

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
