We stand by you in urging Notre Dame administrators

Divine awakening

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, December 3, 2019

For the past two weeks, saying that it happened hasn’t been enough. For some people involved in the dialogue surrounding recent protests, my personal experience is no justification for any proposed structural change at Notre Dame. In airing out the details of what happened leading to the End Hate at ND movement, I hope our

Where is compassion?

Diversity Council | Thursday, November 21, 2019

Something I have mulled over for a significant part of the past year, and I have been presented with many times over the course of my past (almost) three-and-a-half years here, is the issue of lack of compassion. Compassion, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to

Everyone deserves proportionality

BridgeND | Thursday, October 31, 2019

The Eighth Amendment, which prohibits “cruel and unusual punishment,” has always given constitutional scholars some difficulty regarding who is the proper actor to determine its meaning. The task of interpreting the Constitution traditionally falls to the courts, but for judges to apply their personal analysis of “cruel and unusual” seems arbitrary and more than a

Notre Dame dorm system: encouraging gender discrimination?

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, September 21, 2017

We know this might shock you, but we have a gender problem here at Notre Dame. This problem presents itself most apparently through the dorm system. Though the dorms do have many positive attributes and we both still have a lot of love for and loyalty to our dorms, we must not sit complacently by

The evolution of the bathroom predator

Elizabeth Hascher | Thursday, April 14, 2016

In 1972, the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was passed by Congress. After being introduced in every session since 1923, it finally saw progress, due in large part to the second wave of the women’s movement. As the campaign to ratify the ERA in the states waged on, however, opposing groups began to coalesce in a countermovement characterized by

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
