Marcia Lucas: The woman behind the ‘Star Wars’ magic

JP Spoonmore | Friday, October 1, 2021

Marcia Lucas, known for editing the films “Taxi Driver” and “American Graffiti,” gives a peek behind the curtain to some of the greatest classics in cinema in a recently published book, “Howard Kazanjian: A Producer’s Life.” In the foreword, she mentions the casting of Harrison Ford for “Indiana Jones,” while expressing her passion for editing.

‘Cruella’: One of Disney’s best villain origins

Nicole Bilyak | Thursday, September 9, 2021

We all know the saying that good always triumphs over evil. That is what Disney was known for back in the day to the younger generation, but the tables have turned as now evil is the new good. Arguably, “Maleficent” was one of the first films to tell the origin story of the villain.

‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series’ season two: An early review

Alysa Guffey | Tuesday, May 11, 2021

Okay, yes, I like HSMTMTS, and all I want is for that to be okay. Season two of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” (HSMTMTS) will be streaming on Disney+ starting May 14, and it is set to drop the name of the spring musical for the Wildcats along with the start of a

A few weeks ago, Scene was feeling blue. And can you blame us? As we trudged our way through the middle of the semester, our already-low spirits were lowered only still by “permacloud,” rain storms and chilly temperatures. Throw in some seasonal allergies, and you’ve got yourself the month of April. So we did what

What ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ has to offer the rest of the MCU

Hayden Adams | Tuesday, May 4, 2021

(Warning: The following article contains spoilers for “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”) I’m sad to say I wasn’t impressed with “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The middle child of Marvel Studios’ first blatantly canon foray into streaming just didn’t meet the standards they’ve set over the last decade. (I say, “blatantly canon,” given

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier:’ That’s it. That’s the tweet

Sophia Michetti | Wednesday, April 28, 2021

Warning: “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” spoilers ahead! Looking back to six weeks ago when I started watching “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” I was a bit hesitant to say the show would be one of Marvel’s finest. I asked myself, “How could Marvel outdo the masterful sitcom gold that was ‘WandaVision?’” “Am

‘Avatar’ tops all-time box office once again. But who cares?

JP Spoonmore | Tuesday, March 16, 2021

Some of the fondest memories of my youth are my friends’ birthday parties. They were always big sleepovers with 20 kids running around in the basement playing tag or football — that is, until everything changed. From 2009 on, every time a friend invited me to their birthday party, it was to go see James

‘Mulan’ brings honor to no one

Aidan O'Malley | Friday, September 11, 2020

Disney live action remakes are a special kind of cinematic purgatory. Few of them are truly irredeemable; you can always count on lavish production design, ornate costumes and some solid VFX. But in service of what? “Cinderella,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aladdin” — these movies are soulless. I’m not sure a studio has ever been

Ranking a discovered VHS collection

Colleen Fischer | Thursday, September 10, 2020

When I decided to live in Annunciata (the fourth floor of Holy Cross Hall at Saint Mary’s) last year, one of the perks was having a lounge for Annunciata residents only. COVID-19 restrictions have caused all the room’s comfortable seating to be reduced to two hardwood tables and the full kitchen to a single microwave

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
