‘And a Movie’: The story of ‘Community’

The Observer | Thursday, October 13, 2022

“Six seasons and a movie.” For one fandom, this was more than a quote. It was a goal — an aspiration for the show that they loved. This is the story of the show “Community” and how its fans were just so dedicated to harassing NBC employees that the show managed to get saved from

Quarantine ‘Community’ college

Nia Sylva | Monday, April 27, 2020

It’s been 49 days since everyone was last on Notre Dame’s campus. I don’t know if anyone else has been counting, but I certainly have, and I think I speak for all of us when I say that, by this point, we are missing good old South Bend just a little bit. Zoom classes pale

Childish Gambino aims high and misses on ‘3.15.20’

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, March 25, 2020

If our consideration of Donald Glover isn’t narrowed down to one, two or three of his many titles, it is nearly impossible to cover his entire body of work in an article of reasonable length. At the same time, though, it’s hard to contextualize Glover’s early musical work (released under the moniker Childish Gambino) without

A look at the best music from ‘Atlanta’s’ season 2

Ryan Israel | Thursday, March 22, 2018

Donald Glover’s popular comedy series “Atlanta” is praised not only for its realistic humor but also for its excellent soundtrack. The soundtrack represents the southern city’s unique rap scene with songs from the likes of Gucci Mane, Migos and 2 Chainz. The soundtrack, however, also sprinkles in lesser-known artists and tracks that are ideal for

The welcomed evolution of Donald Glover

Adam Ramos | Wednesday, November 30, 2016

Donald Glover is historically corny. Not corny in the fun, Troy and Abed from “Community” sense, but corny more in the vein of throwing a desert festival in your own honor, naming it “Pharos,” and asking attendees to “dress in your frequency color.” Whether it’s comedy, acting or music, he struggles with authenticity, resulting in

Matthew Macke | Friday, September 16, 2016

In 2001, Nas released a track called “Ether,” a withering attack on fellow New York rapper Jay Z. In the aforementioned song, Nas introduced a new phrase into the lexicon of hip hop conversation when he unloaded the line “and Eminem murdered you on your own s—.” At the time it referenced Jay’s song “Renegade,” but

Netflix released “The Characters” on March 11, an eight-episode series that allowed comedians 30 minutes of creative free reign on Netflix’s budget and platform. Netflix has sponsored stand-up specials before, but the sketch-based project sees the platform investing in comedy at an even more involved level. To garner some hype for our favorite comedians, Scene

Childish Gambino changes the game

Erin McAuliffe | Monday, October 13, 2014

Childish Gambino just redefined the game. He released a free mix tape, “STN MTN,” on Oct. 2 and an EP, “KAUAI,” followed the next day. Artists have been trying different promotional strategies recently — or no promotion at all if you’re Beyonce — and Donald Glover just capitalized on the trend. “STN MTN” serves as

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
