Since I could not find any crystal ball to accurately predict the future in

I believe in the American voter

Clark Bowden | Thursday, October 15, 2020

Donald Trump may be one of the best things to happen to America. Now for those of you who have read my columns before (a number I’m fairly certain I could count on two hands), you know me to be a left wing bleeding heart liberal … and you’d be correct. So my opening sentence

You’ve got mail

Maeve Filbin | Thursday, August 13, 2020

I realized I forgot a few things at home: toothpaste, Scotch tape, my rain coat. After six months of living at home, packing for college was a major extraction effort. Assembling my dorm necessities felt like climbing out from under a rock. What else did I need to re-enter the real world outside of quarantine?

Election day

Patrick McKelvey | Tuesday, November 6, 2018

You should vote today. Today is Election Day. Finally. I don’t know about you, but I was getting a little tired of Senator Joe Donnelly’s wood chopping ad that airs every 20 minutes. I didn’t want to see another second of some negative ad campaign about candidates who hate guns or want to cut your

It is true when it reveals something real about the human condition, and educates us about mankind’s potential for good while taking a focused look at the harsh realities of our limitations. Poets have dedicated their lives to

During his two terms as president, Barack Obama graced us with playlists straight from the White House. To get in #ElectionDay spirit, Scene predicted the playlists we think each 2016 candidate would release upon election — and added in their likely reasoning. Clinton: “Formation” – Beyonce: “Say you’ll Bey on Team #Hillary2016, too.” I’ve got hot

Clare Kossler | Friday, November 6, 2015

In the midst of ongoing speculation about the 2016 presidential race, the city of South Bend reelected Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg to serve a second term as mayor Tuesday. Some Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s students – who for the most part could not vote in the South Bend elections as residents of other cities

The laws of dead men

Tim Scanlan | Tuesday, November 4, 2014

Happy Election Day! I have the honor and privilege of writing on this much-hyped and important day in American politics. When I realized what day this column would run, I struggled with what exactly I should say. Do I have a unique enough opinion to sway you about which political candidate you may support? Probably

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.

A glance at the ballot suggests that this year’s candidates all appear to be human and pro-democracy. This observation may seem obvious or nonsensical, but a look back at the history of SBP elections shows that pro-democracy ideals or even personhood are not characteristic of all candidates.
