The effect of disinformation on religious freedom

Blake Ziegler | Thursday, September 8, 2022

When the truth is as flexible as rubber, the stability of democracy isn’t far behind. Disinformation is a fundamental threat to the democratic world. Hallmarks of democracy, such as the free and open exchange of ideas and our institutions, rest on the assumption that our society is committed to the pursuit of truth. This is

‘Fake news’ is our fault

Carolina Jiménez | Friday, April 23, 2021

Fake news. Two words that have seemingly been able to slip into the average Joe’s vocabulary in the past four years. However, pre-2016 election, the words were unbeknownst to the majority of the population. Most blame the appearance on the wondrous former president, who seemed to only be able to communicate in these two words

Consume news responsibly in 2020

Mary Bernard | Tuesday, January 21, 2020

Social media is an intrinsic part of news consumption today. As The Observer’s Social Media Editor (and now, one of the Assistant Managing Editors), this reality is not lost on me. Last semester, 15% of our online viewership came directly from clicking a link on social media, and that number continues to increase. My team

Call me fake news

Gabriel Niforatos | Tuesday, October 30, 2018

I am angry. Over the course of my columns for The Observer, I have tried to be as agreeable as I can possibly be to both sides of the political aisle, in terms of allowing and encouraging dialogue between them. That being said, I am a journalist and I have the privilege of free speech

Is there a problem with our looking glass?

Gabriel Niforatos | Monday, February 12, 2018

Thomas Jefferson once said, “the man who reads nothing at all is better educated than the man who reads nothing but the newspapers.” This remark came in an era very different from today, an era when journalism and reporting did not connect people nearly as much as they do today, but the argument is poignant

Feelings or facts?

Colleen Zewe | Monday, January 22, 2018

If there’s one thing I’ve learned writing for The Observer, it is that good journalists must always avoid bias. When I was on student government, I could not write about student government events or elections, because that would be seen as me promoting a group I’m part of. Of course I wouldn’t say anything negative

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
