‘And a Movie’: The story of ‘Community’

The Observer | Thursday, October 13, 2022

“Six seasons and a movie.” For one fandom, this was more than a quote. It was a goal — an aspiration for the show that they loved. This is the story of the show “Community” and how its fans were just so dedicated to harassing NBC employees that the show managed to get saved from

Antarctica, onion rings, endless anticipation: An autopsy of Lorde stan Twitter

Evan McKenna | Monday, April 12, 2021

Singer-songwriter Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor — known by casual fans as “Lorde” — staked her claim to my brain space in 2019, and she has not left since. I have three Spotify playlists dedicated to this woman. When I’m not listening to her music, I’m asking myself when more might come. “Lorde, where is the

The Snyder cut: directorial vision and fandom

Justin George | Tuesday, March 23, 2021

Since the release of Joss Whedon’s 2017 cut of “Justice League,” fans of DC have been demanding the release of the Snyder cut, a seemingly mythic version of the film that would fulfill Zack Snyder’s original vision for “Justice League” and the DC Extended Universe at large. On Mar. 18, HBO Max released the Snyder cut.

‘WandaVision’ is a hard lesson in fan theories

Aidan O'Malley | Wednesday, March 10, 2021

(Warning: The following article contains spoilers for “WandaVision.” Read Scene’s spoiler-free review here). Watching the season finale to “WandaVision,” I couldn’t help but smile. I just knew it was going to piss people off! I don’t like being this person. I don’t! And chide as I might, you’re allowed to be disappointed. But if my

Capece: Justification for being a fan of perpetual losers

Colin Capece | Thursday, September 26, 2019

This could be the most backwards thing you read all week, but I’m going to write this column anyway. On Tuesday, my colleague Hayden Adams provided justification for being a bandwagon sports fan. While I understand his point of view and very much respect his opinion, I’m here to tell you that Hayden is flat

Mazurek: Sports shine in the grey areas

Marek Mazurek | Thursday, September 21, 2017

I’d like to dedicate this column to my mom and my grandma. They are wonderful people who have nurtured my love of sports and I can confidently say I wouldn’t be in the position I am without them. But watching sports with my mom and grandma can be trying sometimes. My mother’s side of the

Scene Takes On: Lana Del Rey

Wei Lin | Monday, November 16, 2015

Lanatics, the fanbase of Lana Del Rey, are crazy, hence the name. I saw Del Rey during her Endless Summer Tour in New York City, which was one of the last performances of the Governors Ball 2015. With knowledge of where and when she was performing that night, I sat through some obscure artists and

Scene Takes On: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Kelly McGarry | Friday, November 13, 2015

Midnight gatherings, initiation rituals and a full-fledged pledge of allegiance make this fan base the ultimate cult following. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” — part musical, part horror film and entirely outrageous — is the bible for this mysterious group of fans who treat their beloved film as much more than your typical genre flick.

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
