300+ stories later, I’m almost out of words

Aidan Thomas | Wednesday, February 22, 2023

It turned out that a week of sleepless nights in December of 2021, just a few months before I began as Sports Editor, was just some foreshadowing to a wild year that defined a significant part of my college experience. While the resignation of Brian Kelly and ensuing hire of Marcus Freeman remained one of

Observer Editorial: This place will always be your home

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, May 7, 2021

The end of a school year is always bittersweet. Everyone knows at least one senior who will graduate this spring. But while we hate to see them go, we can’t wait to see them thrive. This year, the class of 2021 at Holy Cross, Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame has gone through the unimaginable: They

Advice, like youth, usually comes off as pedantic and unoriginal

Letter to the Editor | Friday, April 23, 2021

Editor’s note: The following letter includes mentions of suicide. When I was a senior in high school, I competed to give one of the commencement speeches for my class’ graduation. Unfortunately, I was not chosen. But much like Mary Schmich of the Chicago Tribune, a deep-seated desire to provide some solemn words of wisdom that I had amassed

Our education of heart and mind

Vince Mallett | Friday, April 23, 2021

I’m dreading graduation next month for so many reasons. Of course, I don’t want to leave this place, this community, and the great friends I have made here. To a lesser, though still significant extent, I’m also worried about continuing my education after my schooling is complete. Not in graduate school or law school —

Thank you, Notre Dame

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, April 7, 2021

Back in February 2020, we were elected on a promise to accompany and advocate for all students and to amplify their voices.  Just a few weeks later, in the now-notorious month of March 2020, Notre Dame brought all students home from study abroad and asked all students living on campus to not return following spring

With gratitude, a farewell from #MeToo

Gary Caruso | Monday, March 22, 2021

Editor’s note: This story includes descriptions of sexual abuse. A list of sexual assault reporting options and on-campus resources can be found on the Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s and Holy Cross websites. The odd paradox about growing old is you’re the same person, and yet you’re not. Each facial wrinkle is a story unto itself. From my life’s viewpoint,

Senior student body president and vice president, Emma McCarthy and Mary Joy Dingler, set out to accomplish several goals this year in an effort to increase transparency between student government and the Saint Mary’s community. McCarthy said in an email she feels honored to have served Saint Mary’s alongside Dingler while representing student government association (SGA). “I am so

Leaving behind an identity

Clare Kossler | Friday, May 19, 2017

There are so many “lasts” in the final few weeks of senior year — each celebrated with commendable gusto and the appropriate amount of nostalgia, perhaps even watery eyes and wavery smiles. There are probably a few too many lasts: Notre Dame — as we are all well aware by this point — is a

Never stop writing

Kathryn Marshall | Friday, May 19, 2017

Thank you, Observer, for shaping me into a storyteller. Stories capture the significance of the world around us by taking snapshots of everyday events and conversations, whether they take place in a lecture hall or at a demonstration downtown. They entertain us, they inform us and even more importantly, they challenge us. They challenge us

Dear Notre Dame students and staff, My life changed for the better the moment I stepped onto the University of Notre Dame’s beautiful campus. The one goal I had set in my mind to achieve was to become a better man, a Notre Dame man. After growing through many trials and triumphs, the thing I’ve

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
