Monday marked the 50th anniversary of the Notre Dame Ten protests, which saw the suspension of 10 Notre Dame students for protesting the Vietnam War on campus in 1969. Several former Notre Dame students and faculty from the era gathered to reflect on the legacy of the demonstration, as well as Notre Dame’s relationship with

Campus cemeteries serve as reminders of death, cycle of life

Ciara Hopkinson | Thursday, October 31, 2019

Located on the edges of campus, Notre Dame’s two cemeteries go largely unnoticed, serving instead as the backdrop of students’ everyday walks to and from campus. As home to not just one, but two, cemeteries, the University is distinct for this fact among its peers. Both the Cedar Grove Cemetery on Notre Dame Avenue and

Revisiting early coeducation at Notre Dame

Katie Hieatt and Annie Moran | Friday, September 13, 2019

“We knew we were groundbreaking. We knew there were a lot of people against us. We knew we would succeed.” Anne Pillai, class of 1977, remembers the day she came home from high school and her mother informed her Notre Dame was accepting women. Now working as the associate program director for education and outreach

The Trump administration has issued interim final rules allowing broad religious and moral exemptions to the mandate that all health insurance plans include coverage for contraception. The exemptions will allow Notre Dame to end contraceptive coverage in student and employee plans as soon as December 2017, just four months into the current plan year. We

11:45 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 26, 2015. That was the moment that forever changed how I viewed the work done in the basement of South Dining Hall by the wonderful people who work for The Observer. It started with a simple statement: “People are saying Fr. Ted died on Twitter.” I don’t remember who exactly said

A brief tale set in a familiar country in a time that is, or is not, to be: There were no fireworks or formal observances, but a few editorial writers noted the 10-year anniversary of legislation that essentially eliminated abortion in the U.S. “It was amazingly quick in effect,” one writer noted, “within two years

Gary Caruso | Friday, September 2, 2016

A woman who plays on my coed softball team retweeted a provocative photograph this week. It surfaced in the wake of the convergence of nationwide campus orientations with a high profile New Hampshire preparatory boarding school assault survivor who shed her anonymity. The tweet simply displayed the image of a college woman holding a handwritten

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
