Big bads of the big screen

Sofia CrimiVaroli | Friday, April 21, 2023

You know who they are: the big bads, the villains, the ne’er-do-wells. This character is a quintessential role in storytelling, the antithesis of everything the protagonist stands for. Ranging from devious masterminds to deranged sociopaths, the movies have fabricated some of the greatest villains of all time. I invite you to join me as I

Still waters run deep in Ireland’s ‘The Quiet Girl’

Aidan O'Malley | Wednesday, April 12, 2023

I don’t know if I’ve told you, but last spring, I studied abroad in Dublin, Ireland. While a running joke in The Observer office is that I am quick to talk about it, to be honest, I don’t think I bring it up that much. Not any more than it deserves, anyways. In fact, it

Scott Pilgrim’s precious little franchise

Andy Ottone | Thursday, April 6, 2023

It was like every other romantic story before it: Boy meets girl, boy already has a girlfriend, boy tries to date both at once, boy finds out he has to defeat his new girlfriend’s seven evil ex-partners, boy breaks up with old girlfriend and finally, boy fights the seven evil exes. Bryan Lee O’Malley published

Erin Farmer | Tuesday, February 28, 2023

When Mike Schmiedeler, ‘94 graduate in FTT and Marketing, finished his first feature-length independent documentary film “Don’t Turn Your Back on Friday Night” about musician Ike Reilly, he knew he wanted his first audience to be at Notre Dame. In his introduction to the screening, Mike credited Notre Dame and the job he got after

Reflecting on the philosophy of ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’

Marcelle Couto | Thursday, February 16, 2023

In light of the spectacular reception of “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the box office, I thought it fitting to unpack the implicit philosophical message of the film. I recall emerging from the movie theater bewildered by the pathos and cinematic quality of “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” But, I was also remarkably conflicted

‘No Bears’: A meta-film about dissent in Iran

Angela Mathew | Wednesday, February 8, 2023

Iranian auteur Jafar Panahi’s latest film “No Bears” is an exploration of life under Iran’s authoritarian government. Like a lot of Panahi’s recent work, it has been shaped by his experiences with the government that has censored his art and placed him under house arrest. Since July 2022, he has been in Tehran’s notorious Evin

‘DUM-de went my trochaic heart’ after watching the ‘My Policeman’

Ananya Dalmia | Friday, December 2, 2022

There are movies that make you feel something. Then, there are the gut-wrenching movies that shatter the very expectations that you have about love and leave you and your group of friends crying for 20 minutes after the credits have rolled. “My Policeman,” written by Bethan Roberts, does a phenomenal job of shifting the viewers

Observer Editorial: Now what? Activities for post-football season

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, November 11, 2022

Fall can be quite an overwhelming season in college. School, club activities, job applications and social events make a week fly by. Football season makes the weekend almost as tiring as the week, leaving you with even less free time to diversify your schedule. With just one home football game left, you might be wondering:

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’: A disappointment 6.5 million years in the making

Kait Milleret | Thursday, September 8, 2022

Dinosaurs divide the population into two types: those who love them and those who couldn’t care less. Somehow, “Jurassic World: Dominion” doesn’t inspire either stance. With its unfocused story and bloated plot, the movie plods to its conclusion as if anticipating extinction at the hands of other summer films. Even the resurrection of fan-favorite characters

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
