A game to make Fr. Ted proud

Letter to the Editor | Monday, March 30, 2015

Over the years, I had a few chances to talk sports with former University President Emeritus, Fr. Theodore Hesburgh. I watched a Bookstore Basketball game with him one time. Sat with him at a varsity mens’ game another. Even talked football with him at a political fundraiser. I actually had the moxie to ask him if

The morality of midterms

Patrick Glennon | Wednesday, March 18, 2015

With the passing of Father Hesburgh, this past midterms week left many students (myself included) physically and emotionally exhausted. Whether we were waiting in line at 2 a.m. for Fr. Ted’s visitation, shivering outside the Basilica while waiting for the funeral procession to begin or studying for three midterms and two quizzes, we were all

‘First and foremost a priest’

Ann Marie Jakubowski | Thursday, March 5, 2015

The funeral Mass celebrating the life of University President Emeritus Fr. Theodore Hesburgh on Wednesday afternoon commended him to heaven with the strength of more than 1,000 participants. At the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, where he was first ordained in 1943, more than 100 of his brother priests from the Congregation of Holy Cross

Study abroad students remember Hesburgh, reflect on his global legacy

Jack Rooney | Thursday, March 5, 2015

DUBLIN — When news of University President Emeritus Fr. Theodore “Ted” Hesburgh’s death broke shortly after 1:00 a.m. Friday, hundreds of students had a uniquely Notre Dame instinct: go to the Grotto, light a candle and pray. For hundreds of other students studying in one of Notre Dame’s over 30 study abroad programs, the warm

One last smoke

Greg Hadley | Thursday, March 5, 2015

After a full day spent celebrating the life of University President Emeritus Fr. Theodore Hesburgh, students gathered one last time Wednesday to remember him in the most fitting of ways: smoking a cigar. Outside of Hesburgh Library, roughly 600 people gathered following the memorial service in Purcell Pavilion and lit up stogies the same way

Thank you

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, March 5, 2015

To the Students of Notre Dame: I’m sure I will not be only one to write a letter like this. Your tribute to Fr. Ted, lining the route to the cemetery in silent respect, was impressive beyond what words can adequately describe. One hundred years from now, when all of us are long gone, you

The road to recovery

Scott Boyle | Thursday, March 5, 2015

Last Thursday started off as an average Thursday afternoon and evening. I wanted to expand my culinary palate, so, naturally, I ventured to a wings restaurant here in Indianapolis. Wing purists can rest easy, though. I did not go to Buffalo Wild Wings. While the wings were satisfying, it was the conversation that I most

Knock and the door will open

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, March 5, 2015

I am from South Bend, and this university has always been a part of my life casting its shadow over me. At first, I dreamed of going here all throughout my childhood, but as I grew older I began to detest the idea of staying home and going to school here. I struggled my freshman

‘A great and holy priest’

Lesley Stevenson | Wednesday, March 4, 2015

“Come, Holy Spirit.” When University President Emeritus Fr. Edward “Monk” Malloy stood before a capacity crowd at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on Tuesday night, he invoked God’s guidance in illuminating the complex, dynamic life of University President Emeritus Fr. Theodore Hesburgh. Facing a congregation of Hesburgh’s family and friends and flanked by dorm

Fr. Ted’s lesson in saying ‘yes’

Molly Daily | Wednesday, March 4, 2015

The first time I met Father Ted, it was by accident — I was in the right place at the right time. I was a freshman, nervously studying for my exams on the first floor of the library, when Fr. Ted’s incredible assistant came into the room. She asked if anyone would like to read

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
