All the way back in July of 2020, before our time at Notre Dame Law School had truly begun, those in our class who had professor Richard W. Garnett for Criminal Law received his classic piece on the four layers of the law, each layer getting closer to the core of what this thing we

An open letter on academic freedom

Letter to the Editor | Monday, March 6, 2023

Universities across the country wrestle with what it means to maintain academic freedom and free speech under the weight of an increasingly polarized culture. The writing on the wall (of Hesburgh Library)

Claire Miller | Wednesday, October 13, 2021

If the last few weeks have taught me anything about Notre Dame culture and student life, it is that anonymous speech readily embraced by the student body. In particular, much discussion has revolved around the use, and misuse, of Yik Yak, the anonymous social media platform. Then just last week, there were “free speech boards”

Overthrow of democracy

Trevor Lwere | Monday, March 1, 2021

Early this year, Facebook and Twitter shut down accounts associated with social media bloggers related to the government and the ruling party in Uganda. Some voices. One University approved conversation

Jackie O'Brien | Monday, September 9, 2019

I was surprised by the content of our University’s ad that played Sept. 2 over the half-time break, “Many voices. One conversation.” Of course, it was a great ad and it made me very proud to be a Notre Dame student, especially considering the national audience who saw it, but it’s unfortunate that it is

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
