McGuinness: Why you should cheer for your friends’ teams

Andrew McGuinness | Wednesday, April 5, 2023

510 miles from where it happened, I stared into my phone camera in perfect Jim Halpert deadpan style. “Montréal wins it!” exclaimed announcer Brendan Burke in the background. The Canadiens, the lowest seed in the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, had just cashed in on a clear-cut two-on-none in overtime to beat the Toronto Maple Leafs

Go Irish, beat imposter syndrome

Andrew McGuinness | Monday, March 27, 2023

What is your first memory? It’s probably something very random. But maybe it provided a hint about the person you will become — your interests, your personality, a glimpse into the future and the past all at once. My first memory is not that. It’s going to preschool or daycare and being excited they had

Let’s go for a drive

Gabrielle Beechert | Wednesday, March 22, 2023

Whenever students discuss coming home for break, many talk about the things they crave. Usually it’s getting food, visiting a certain place or seeing a certain friend. When I am getting ready to go home, the thing I crave the most is going on a drive. Going on drives has been fundamental to my hometown

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, September 23, 2022

Being back on campus means getting back into the swing of things. Whether that means getting used to school work routines, friend groups or even drinking and going out, it’s not always easy. In addition to a list of resources from our rolodex last week, we want to not forget general reminders that can go

Take a chance, make a friend

Anna Hurt | Wednesday, April 13, 2022

I like to think out loud. So, when I was brainstorming for this column, I said out loud, to myself “what should I write my column about?” to which my roommate jokingly replied “you should write it about me.”  She was just kidding, but I think she’s an excellent topic to write about.  She was

Maybe it’s a ‘duh’ moment

Madeline Law | Wednesday, March 30, 2022

This past week I realized that I still have not put up any pictures in my dorm room. It’s strange to me because I’ve always considered pictures to be one of the most important things I bring to school. Every semester, I would choose a place in my room to display a visual summary of

Embrace the holiday spirit

Sophia Michetti | Wednesday, December 1, 2021

My love for the holiday season stems from my excitement at seeing anything bright and shiny: the Christmas tree, the lights on houses in the neighborhood, the gleam off of the little plastic bows that my dogs try to tear off of presents every year. The holiday season is a time of giving and embracing

How to fail at starting a band in college

Colleen Fischer | Thursday, May 6, 2021

(Or: A coming-of-age essay about giving up on your dreams) Step One: Want to start a band  All failed bands start the same way with someone wanting to start a band. If you talked to me in high school and asked me if I wanted to start a band, I would probably say that bands

How I started going to church, and why you should too By: Mariah Rush, Managing Editor Just six short weeks ago, it came. I was minding my own business, scrolling through TikTok when I saw Charli D’Amelio, the most famous child in America, doing what I can best describe as an interpretive dance. I scrolled

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
