The only thing my dog was practically good for was replacing our broken doorbell. For as long as I can remember, growing up in my house meant missing visitors, because our doorbell never worked, and for some reason no one fixed it. It was not uncommon to be alerted of someone’s presence by a phone

Introductions

Natalie Weber | Wednesday, February 21, 2018

About a month ago I was talking with one of the RAs in my dorm when she mentioned a bucket list her professor had given her. One of the items on the list, she said, was to introduce yourself to someone new every day. Intrigued by this idea, I decided to give it a try.

First person (a point of view)

Mike Donovan | Friday, February 16, 2018

It is morning. First, I’m asleep. Like most people, I begin my day in bed, asleep. Then, an alarm goes off. I still sleep. Chris (my roommate) throws a pillow. The aforementioned pillow makes contact with my face. I wake up. Following my awakening (in the least metaphorical sense), I brush my teeth. I do

The beauty of embracing life’s uncertainties

Margaret Hynds | Friday, May 19, 2017

Most of my life gets planned out on yellow legal pads. I find comfort in plans, to-do lists and spreadsheets, and have been known to get physically uncomfortable when I don’t know what’s coming. So, no; I was not expecting this week to go very well for me I feel as though I’m in limbo

A special thanks to O’Neill 3A

Alex Carson | Friday, May 19, 2017

I like to think of life as a simulation. No, not like “The Matrix.” I actually think the world is real and, well, not some simulated reality. Rather in the way that reality differs based on decisions, ones that are either within or outside of our control. One thing happens and you live in one world.

Reflecting on our blessings

Natalie Weber | Thursday, February 23, 2017

I have been advised — on multiple occasions — to write down three positive things that happened to me each day. Supposedly, this practice would help me to increase my ability to engage in positive thinking. However, I always thought it sounded like tacky advice pulled from a cheap self-help book and never bothered to

Losing a lost art

Megan Valley | Thursday, April 7, 2016

My best friend from high school, Alex, recently graduated from boot camp for the Navy. Obviously, I’m super proud of her and all, but the best part of her graduating was she got her phone back. For two months, I wrote Alex letters; it was the only way we could communicate. Every couple of days,

Moments we miss

Victoria Llorens | Monday, March 21, 2016

Have you ever tried going without your phone for a day or two? It’s actually rather freeing. Everyday the urge to check for notifications buzzes at the back of our minds until we finally give in. We take our phones everywhere and check them constantly to the point where we forget that we are surrounded

Glee Club reunion

Scott Boyle | Tuesday, October 13, 2015

A couple of weekends ago, alumni of the Notre Dame Glee Club returned to Notre Dame’s campus for a celebration of its 100-year existence. It was an opportunity to reflect on impact of the club in the lives of its members and the wider community. There were quite a few alumni in attendance. Final numbers

Scene’s ’90s TV spin-off ideas

Adam Ramos, Kelly McGarry, Kathy Minko and Miko Malabute | Tuesday, September 22, 2015

ERIN RICE | The Observer As ’90s babies, we all are very fond of the TV shows we grew up with. And with the spin-off of “Zoey 101” recently released for our nostalgic pleasure, our collective imaginations here at Scene came up with the best childhood TV shows we would love to see revisited, if

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
