The funk is necessary

Kate Casper | Tuesday, October 11, 2022

I knew I was in a funk when I took myself on a lake walk last Saturday. While the cause was unclear at the time, I knew for sure my funk was triggered by something. Specifically, I knew it was triggered by my self-imposed “Snapchat Detox”: I would allow myself only 15 minutes of Snapchat

Childish Gambino aims high and misses on ‘3.15.20’

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, March 25, 2020

If our consideration of Donald Glover isn’t narrowed down to one, two or three of his many titles, it is nearly impossible to cover his entire body of work in an article of reasonable length. At the same time, though, it’s hard to contextualize Glover’s early musical work (released under the moniker Childish Gambino) without

Black Pumas and the revival of funk

Margaux Miller | Monday, February 24, 2020

Active since 2017, The Black Pumas are a newly formed band with a retro funk vibe including samples from many R&B tracks nodding at older, but very notable artists. Singer, Eric Burton and guitarist Adrian Quesada formed this psychedelic soul duo in Austin, Texas. Burton’s soulful voice coupled with Queseda’s experience as part of Grupo

Vulfpeck struggles with identity on ‘Mr. Finish Line’

Charlie Kenney | Friday, November 17, 2017

Music, at its most basic, either has vocals or it doesn’t. Bands fall into one of two categories. The Beatles have vocals, Brahms doesn’t; Lady Gaga has vocals, John Coltrane doesn’t; Kanye West has vocals, Hans Zimmer doesn’t. It’s simple and straightforward. It’s how music would be categorized if genres didn’t exist. Instead of zeros

Steve Lacy’s teenage dream comes alive

Jack Riedy | Friday, April 7, 2017

At an age when most Americans are working on college applications, Steve Lacy already has a Grammy nomination. The 18-year-old joined up with Californian R&B outfit The Internet as a guitarist and producer, earning widespread accolades for 2015’s “Ego Death.” Like a neo-soul Wu-Tang Clan, each member of the group is now releasing solo material

‘Drunk’ Thundercat finds his groove

Jack Riedy | Monday, March 6, 2017

Thundercat is ready to have some fun again. The vocalist and bass virtuoso born Stephen Bruner has spent the last few years lending his sound to generation-defining albums by Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington and Kendrick Lamar. Bruner’s sinewy bass parts and keening backing vocals were a reliable source of warmth, but he was a part

Changing music, changing seasons

Rebecca O'Neil | Tuesday, February 17, 2015

Last year, I left Indiana for winter break with Chet Faker’s “Thinking in Textures” ringing in my ears. “I’m Into You” came up on a Flume binge sometime around Thanksgiving and soon after infiltrated every playlist I created. YouTube’s “suggestions for you” just get me. Faker’s warm raspy voice against the crisp sound of a

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
