‘House of the Dragon’: A worthy heir

Matheus Herndl | Friday, November 4, 2022

There have been few disasters in entertainment history comparable to the final season of “Game of Thrones” back in 2019. In only six episodes, the once worldwide phenomenon that drew in millions of viewers collapsed, ridiculed for outright bad writing, ruining even its previous seasons in the eyes of many fans. When the “Game of

2022: The year of the prequel

Matheus Herndl | Tuesday, September 13, 2022

The trend of endless movie sequels is by no means a recent one. Ever since the 70s and the birth of summer blockbuster franchises like Jaws or Star Wars, the sequel has been a staple in yearly releases to the joy of some fans and the detriment of others. Indeed, the market dominance of big-budget

‘The Northman’ is the best revenge film in years

Justin George | Monday, April 25, 2022

In his latest film “The Northman,” Robert Eggers takes us back to the Viking Age as we follow a young Viking prince on his quest to reclaim his kingdom, kill his murderous uncle, avenge his father’s death and save his mother. If this sounds at all familiar, that’s because it’s basically “Hamlet” (well, actually it’s

The scattered ideas of ‘The Witcher’ season two

JP Spoonmore | Wednesday, January 12, 2022

After two years of waiting through COVID-19 delays and an almost career-ending leg injury suffered by its star, Netflix’s “The Witcher” released its second season. Unlike the decades-long story threads characteristic of the show’s the previous season, though, the new plot is as temporally straightforward as possible, spanning maybe a month. Though many of the

Three things I learned from ‘Game of Thrones’

Vince Mallett | Friday, October 23, 2020

Warning: Major spoilers, for all eight seasons of “Game of Thrones” and all five books of “A Song of Ice and Fire,” are discussed in this column.  I am a die-hard “Game of Thrones” fanatic. The show is one of my all-time favorites, and the book series on which it is based is my absolute

Commencement 2020: Four years in review

Ryan Israel and Mike Donovan | Friday, May 15, 2020

It’s time to turn the clock back to what, in retrospect, seems like a simpler time: late summer 2016. The class of 2020 first arrived on campus via an “Ultralight Beam,” looking forward to four years of academic and faith “Formation” and dreaming of staying up “All Night” with friends. Not yet “Destroyed by Hippie Powers,”

‘Westworld’ provides an escape from reality

Christopher Parker | Tuesday, March 24, 2020

Like every drama created by HBO, “Westworld” is an epic. It’s not the kind of show that plays in the background while you plug Calculus II questions into WolframAlpha. It requires undivided attention, time for contemplation and the kind of imagination we can only achieve when … well, when we’re locked in a house for

Scene on the Screen 2019

Willoughby Thom, Ryan Israel, Mike Donovan, Charlie Kenney, Dessi Gomez and Gina Twardosz | Monday, December 9, 2019

Scene on the Screen: looking into the best, the worst and the weirdest filmmaking, on both the big and small screens, from 2019. Cinema? Who is she? By Mike Donovan, Scene Editor Robert Downey Jr.’s “Avengers: Endgame” martyrdom tried quite diligently to signal “‘the end of an era,’ punctuating a sprawling filmic enterprise” with the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
