From the Archives: Panty raids and beauty contests — Notre Dame’s history of sexist traditions

Uyen Le, Chris Russo, Spencer Kelly and Lilyann Gardner | Monday, September 27, 2021

The anonymous messages on Yik Yak targeting Saint Mary’s students showed that fraught gender relations in the tri-campus community are not a thing of the past. Despite institutional and cultural shifts, many women here continue to be subjected to sexist attacks and microaggressions. This week’s edition of From the Archives seeks to uncover Notre Dame’s

Following the results of a football ticket lottery for the Shamrock Series football game on Saturday, harmful, hateful messages surged on the anonymous social media platform Yik Yak. From the Archives: Notre Dame’s first class of women

Evan McKenna, Adriana Perez and Madilynn O'Hara | Monday, September 28, 2020

In the fall of 1971, after years of plans for a Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s merger were ultimately scrapped, the University offered a highly-contested consolation — the admittance of women into the class of 1972.  This week’s edition of From the Archives explores the aftermath of the University’s coeducation decision: administrative adjustments, evolving traditions

Response to parietal protest — activism in search of a cause

Letter to the Editor | Friday, November 22, 2019

Assuming the piece published earlier this week defending the parietal sit-in at Stanford Hall was not satirical, I write to respond to the absurdity of the author’s claims.  For those who have not read it — “Parietals criminalize gender itself, but we already knew that” — the basis of the author’s argument is that parietals

Notre Dame needs to step up on intercampus stereotyping

Katie Hieatt and Annie Moran | Friday, September 27, 2019

Among the attempts to characterize Notre Dame culture that line the shelves of the Hammes Bookstore, there exists a cheeky character called “Things Notre Dame Students Like,” its contents compiled from a blog of the same name. Being lovers of relatable and self-deprecating humor (read: Twitter. We like Twitter.), we were eager to discover aspects

Seeing both sides of the same coin

Emma Farnan | Wednesday, October 10, 2018

The past year of my life has been incredibly exciting and eye-opening. In addition to expanding my academic horizon with every other student at Notre Dame, I have also taken medically prescribed hormones each day to physically transition into a woman. I am transgender and have finally been living as myself, a woman, for the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
