Emma Duffy | Monday, October 3, 2022

On Monday, Notre Dame will host its annual forum at the stadium. Because of this year’s theme is war and peace, Notre Dame has made its keynote event a presentation from the Theater of War Productions — specifically, their project The “Suppliants” Project: Ukraine. Theater of War Productions uses ancient texts to draw attention to

‘Emily in Paris’: The millennial fantasy of a white woman in a foreign place

Natalie Allton | Tuesday, January 25, 2022

Season two of “Emily in Paris” dropped late last month, following a polarized response to the first season and two controversial nominations at last year’s Golden Globes. The show was widely criticized for its stereotypical portrayal of the French, cliché writing and a vapid, entitled “Mary Sue” protagonist. Despite these critiques, “Emily in Paris” remains

‘Nomadland’ and the road not taken

Aidan O'Malley | Wednesday, February 24, 2021

I watched Chloé Zhao’s “Nomadland” on my laptop. It is an ugly sight — a Samsung I’ve had since my freshman year of high school that can no longer even be described as stainless steel, due to a variety of brown and silver splotches I’ve so graciously adorned it with. It takes approximately five minutes

‘Call Me by Your Name’ review

Charlie Kenney | Tuesday, February 6, 2018

Northern Italy in the summer of 1983, a teenage prodigy transcribing classical music, a doctoral student studying sculpture and Heraclitus, late night swims in the ocean, excursions to Rome, an apricot orchard, too much time to fill and too little to fill it with. It sounds like a recipe for apathy, weariness and unconcern —

‘Phantom Thread’ review

Charlie Kenney | Wednesday, January 24, 2018

“Phantom Thread” doesn’t try to wow. Outwardly, it is timid, unambitious and introverted. It’s a film about a world-renowned dressmaker at the center of the fashion world in post-war England and his inability to love — or at least love properly. Its plot, characters and conflict don’t scream exuberance, excitement or memorability (and rightfully so).

‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ tells a unique story with troubling aspects

Ryan Israel | Monday, January 22, 2018

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” is the Golden Globe winning crime drama that proves to be much more than a simple story. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the picture offers a look at rural America and the problems that plague it. While the movie features accomplished actors and an interesting perspective, the plot has

‘We became the story’: women take control at the Golden Globes

Nora McGreevy | Wednesday, January 17, 2018

Woman after woman filed down the red carpet, each clad defiantly in black. #TimesUp pins on lapels glinted under the glare of paparazzi flashes. Activists such as Tarana Burke, Marai Larasi, Rosa Clemente, Ai-jen Poo, Billie Jean King and many more mingled with the regular Hollywood crowd on the red carpet and in the glitzy

We need more women directors

Patrick McKelvey | Wednesday, January 17, 2018

The 75th Annual Golden Globes, which aired on Jan. 7, were marked by a powerful display of support for the Time’s Up movement against sexual assault and harassment. Allegations of sexual abuse by producer Harvey Weinstein, which first surfaced in October of 2017, have since shed light on the epidemic of abuse in Hollywood, with
