The GOP’s existential crisis

Blake Ziegler | Wednesday, February 10, 2021

It’s interesting to see history on the cusp of repeating itself.  We saw the rise of our nation’s first two major political parties in the election of 1796, which featured candidates from the Federalist Party and the Democratic-Republican Party, factions that vehemently opposed each other’s platforms. Over time, the Democratic-Republicans became the modern Democratic Party.

Why was he there?

Letter to the Editor | Wednesday, October 7, 2020

This letter is not about University President Fr. John Jenkins’ behavior at the White House last weekend when he attended President Donald Trump’s announcement of the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Instead, it is about a question that has been lost in all

The era of stupidity

Mary Szromba | Wednesday, February 12, 2020

Watching Donald Trump stumble his way through his presidency has been a fascinating and depressing experience. How has a man who lacks intelligence, experience and political instincts managed not to destroy his own presidency yet? It seems like he is incapable of stringing a coherent sentence together when it isn’t scripted. How was he still

(Don’t) keep truckin’

Stephen Raab | Tuesday, April 4, 2017

At time of writing, about 3.5 million men and women work as professional truck drivers in the United States. Combined, they move more than 10 billion tons of freight each year, with a combined estimated value of $671 billion. Whether you call it a big rig, a semi, a tractor trailer, or an eighteen-wheeler, the

The Tarring of Congress

Gary Caruso | Friday, February 17, 2017

North Carolina, the “Tar Heel” or “Old North” State, is renowned for iconic events such as the Wright brothers’ aviation first in Kitty Hawk, honored on the state’s license plate with the phrase, “First in Flight.” Politically, however, after the Republican Party gained total control of the governor’s house and both legislative chambers for the first

Make debates boring again

Stephen Raab | Monday, August 29, 2016

Throughout the election season, we’ve seen the various candidates square off in innumerable debates across America, and the one thread through all of it is showmanship. These events have drawn packed crowds, cheering and applauding wildly whenever the candidates stop speaking. In an effort to keep social media buzzing, the moderators have taken to pulling

Donald Trump’s anti-Americanism

Neil Joseph | Monday, February 29, 2016

Donald Trump’s slogan for his campaign this year is “Make America Great Again.” A clear, simplistic and admittedly politically savvy slogan, it is supposed to define what his presidential campaign is all about. He believes our country is in shambles and needs to be brought out of this ruin with some great deals and a

Hoping for GOP dropouts

Kyle Palmer | Friday, September 25, 2015

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker did something Monday evening that is increasingly uncommon in today’s political environment: He realized when he lost, and accepted it. His campaign was in debt, with little chance of recovering in the coming months, and unlike another unnamed GOP candidate, self-funding really wasn’t an option for Walker. He spoke for less

Thoughts for the GOP in 2016

JC Sullivan | Tuesday, February 24, 2015

As the 2016 Presidential race begins to materialize, Republican advisors are in the midst of brainstorming campaign strategies to reclaim the White House. While the Democratic nomination seems to be all but a formality at this point, the Republican nomination remains wide open. For this reason, it is important to consider and reflect on how

Addressing a void of leadership in America

Dan Sehlhorst | Thursday, November 6, 2014

Do you hear the collective nationwide sigh of relief? The midterm elections have passed. After months of analysis, predictions and inexorable campaigns, votes have been cast and the talking heads are deciphering the results and brandishing new prognostications. Although the Republican Party ran away with a sweeping victory, the GOP should be careful not to interpret

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
