The value of the mass line

Pablo Lacayo | Wednesday, March 1, 2023

One of my favorite classes this semester has been Politics of China, a solid political science course dedicated to the history of Chinese politics since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in the fall of 1949. I have been able to learn a great deal about China’s journey from near anarchy in the

What’s next?

Notre Dame Write to Vote | Thursday, December 8, 2022

What’s next? This immortal question is the catchphrase of Jed Bartlet, fictional U.S. president and Notre Dame graduate in “The West Wing.” After every celebration of a bill passed, nominee confirmed or negotiation reached, Jed would ask the same question. What’s next? One month out from the 2022 midterm elections, you might find yourself asking

Democracy on life support

Pablo Lacayo | Wednesday, March 2, 2022

A couple of weeks ago, a good friend of mine called me out in the middle of class for not paying attention to the lecture, and beckoned me to stop goofing around my computer. She asked me what I was doing, unable to figure out the purpose of the website I was playing around in

The consent of the governed

David Henry | Thursday, December 2, 2021

“… Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,” Thomas Jefferson claimed in the Declaration of Independence. This claim, that governments are legitimized by the consent of the governed, is an important one because it is nothing less than the moral justification for every law and institution our

Too much of anything is always bad

Trevor Lwere | Monday, August 17, 2020

It is a foregone conclusion that the ongoing pandemic has fundamentally disrupted our ways of life. Yet we don’t seem to be actively thinking about the reverse; how have our ways of life, individually and collectively as a society, affected our experience of the pandemic? In particular, whereas a lot has been said about the

The bipartisan case for a Universal Basic Income

BridgeND | Wednesday, February 13, 2019

To most, a Marxian society and a society where everyone receives an annual income from the government do not sound too different. However, the second could exist in a world radically different than a Marxian one; it could exist in our world. In fact, this idea has gained momentum even within conservative and libertarian circles.

There is no separation of church and state

BridgeND | Wednesday, November 28, 2018

There is no such thing as separation of church and state. The two are totally inseparable, and what the modern interpretation of the term really means is the substitution of one church for another. One which is pretty gross, in my opinion. For clarification, I’m not saying that separation of church and state isn’t desirable

Jordan Ryan | Monday, January 29, 2018

This Tuesday, Jan. 30th, President Trump will deliver his first State of the Union before members of Congress. In the traditional letter from the Speaker of the House inviting the President to make the constitutionally required address, Speaker Paul Ryan suggested the broad framework for President Trump’s speech writing, “Today, we are in the midst

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
