Landon Slaggert talks Irish hockey, series with Michigan

Ryan Murphy | Friday, February 24, 2023

To say that Notre Dame hockey has been a big part of Landon Slaggert’s life would be an understatement. After all, the junior forward’s relationship with the team essentially began at birth.    “My dad’s been a coach, I think this is his 30th season now? Kind of crazy how time flies by,” Slaggert said after

Irish ride Compton crowds, defense in resurgent season

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, May 13, 2022

Last season was a tough year for every sports team. But it felt like most of the Notre Dame hockey team‘s struggles were specifically attributed to COVID-19. The Irish uncharacteristically struggled in an uncharacteristically empty home rink. They didn‘t seem to have a clear identity. And the Irish didn‘t even get to enjoy the fruits

Brothers on and off the ice: Slaggerts, Janickes join history of Notre Dame hockey siblings

Gracie Eppler | Friday, April 8, 2022

On the way to preschool, the Janicke family car blasted the Notre Dame fight song on repeat. A love for Irish hockey was ingrained in the two Janicke brothers’ heads since before they were even old enough to pick up a stick. Eight hours away, the Slaggert brothers jammed along to the same melody with

Notre Dame’s hockey season officially ended last Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Minnesota State in the NCAA Tournament Regional Finals. For some of the graduating players on Notre Dame’s roster, it may be the end of their playing careers. But three skaters—senior defenseman Spencer Stastney, graduate student defenseman Adam Karashik, and senior forward Graham

Nate Moller | Saturday, March 26, 2022

The 2021-22 season came to an end for the Irish on Saturday evening in Albany as the Irish fell 1-0 to Minnesota State in a physical, fast-paced game. The Mavericks looked like the better team for most of the night, but the Irish competed well too, generating plenty of scoring opportunities. Saturday night’s win was

Irish hockey looks to continue success vs. Michigan in conference semifinal

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, March 11, 2022

Perhaps nothing shows just how far the Irish hockey team (26-9-0, 16-6-0-4-0-0 B10) have come this year, especially compared to the last two seasons where they were a pedestrian 29-28-9, like their record against the Michigan Wolverines (27-9-1, 16-8-0-0-3-0). Holding your own against a Michigan team stacked with the first, second, fourth and fifth overall

Irish hockey ends regular season with series sweep of Michigan

Andrew McGuinness | Monday, February 28, 2022

Compton Family Ice Arena fell silent a mere 2:24 after the puck dropped on Friday night. Defenseman Nick Blankenburg crept down undetected off an offensive zone face-off win by the No. 2 Wolverines (25-10-1, 16-9-0-0-0 B10), burying a backdoor feed from Mackie Samoskevich. It was easy to see how Michigan could have used that goal,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
