The 2022-2023 Notre Dame student senate convened for its second to last meeting Wednesday evening in the Mendoza College of Business. Student body president Patrick Lee offered his final State of the Student Union address and senators deliberated on four Student Union awards. After opening prayer, roll call and the approval of minutes, director of

Gratefulness

Isabelle Kause | Friday, December 2, 2022

As I made my way back from Chicago to South Bend after a relaxing and enjoyable Thanksgiving break with my family, I found myself reflecting on the last few days with an immense amount of gratitude. Last year, during my first year of college, I spent the beginning part of Thanksgiving break working on a

On saying thank you

Hannah Hebda | Friday, December 2, 2022

We don’t have many formal Thanksgiving traditions in the Hebda household. The holiday is pretty standard for us. I love cooking with my mom, watching football with my brothers and my dad and simply spending time with my family. One very basic tradition we do have, however, is one where each of us says something

An aspie’s gratitude

Jack Griffiths | Friday, December 2, 2022

Head spectrum is the cognitive carnival. Your neurons have soared off the rails. So hold on to your everything, ladies and gentlemen. Behold the hidden wonder of the world and watch as thoughts bounce on all the cranium walls.  Getting the opportunity to (metaphorically) spill ink about my personal experiences and about neurodivergence more broadly

Nov. 14-20 marked Worker Appreciation Week on campus and in honor of the week, various groups, including Campus Ministry, Student Government, the Center for Social Concerns (CSC), BridgeND and residence halls, came together to celebrate and uplift the Notre Dame staff. Bridget Schippers, a junior who helped organize Worker Appreciation Week (WAW), said the goal

With gratitude

Mary Ellen Woods | Thursday, April 14, 2022

One of the areas we explored in the Fellows Class of the Inspired Leadership Initiative (ILI) Fellows is the concept of gratitude. Our discussion focused on gratitude as a way of life — being truly appreciative of the joys in life, both small and large. As my time in ILI and on-campus draws to a

To the sports department, thank you and I’ll be back

Mannion McGinley | Monday, March 21, 2022

“If you can’t play sports? Write ‘em.” Former Sports Editor Hayden Adams quoted fellow former Sports Editor Ellen Geyer on that point throughout my entire first two years in the department.  So that’s what I did and now, I wear those words on my wrist daily. The quote is written on a black bracelet with

When I first joined The Observer as a second-semester first-year at Saint Mary’s College, I never imagined that The Observer office in the basement of South Dining Hall would become my second home. Yet, over the past two and a half years, The Observer has become one of the most significant parts of my life.

A thank you to the nation’s research librarians

Devin Humphreys | Tuesday, October 5, 2021

One incredible benefit of being at Notre Dame Law School is the opportunity to complete a directed reading. A directed reading is where you develop a research proposal and write a substantive paper on that topic, guided one-on-one by a professor of your choosing. At the end of the semester, a paper of 10,000 words

Lessons from a sunset

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, May 11, 2021

The other day, I went on a walk to St. Mary’s lake with a few friends. Honestly, it was less of a walk and more of a picture-taking session. After all, it was evening and if you have never seen a sunset at St. Mary’s lake, you are really missing out. And this spring sunset

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
