A thank you to the nation’s research librarians

Devin Humphreys | Tuesday, October 5, 2021

One incredible benefit of being at Notre Dame Law School is the opportunity to complete a directed reading. A directed reading is where you develop a research proposal and write a substantive paper on that topic, guided one-on-one by a professor of your choosing. At the end of the semester, a paper of 10,000 words

Lessons from a sunset

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, May 11, 2021

The other day, I went on a walk to St. Mary’s lake with a few friends. Honestly, it was less of a walk and more of a picture-taking session. After all, it was evening and if you have never seen a sunset at St. Mary’s lake, you are really missing out. And this spring sunset

Hopeful pessimism

Katie Harmeyer | Monday, February 22, 2021

Last spring semester, I wrote an inside column that was published March 20 — so, by my records, precisely one week after it all went down. Rereading that column makes me laugh. A foundational assumption in the piece: Normal times would resume in probably about 30 days. Ha. Anyway — because it’s Lent (I should

For the fall break we never had

Sydni Brooks | Monday, October 26, 2020

I would make the argument that the majority of us as students were concerned about the absence of a fall break in this school year. Fall break provides us with the time to catch up on the readings we are weeks behind on and recharge our social, physical, and academic batteries through relaxation. We are

To viewers like you, thank you

Maria Leontaras | Friday, May 1, 2020

During spring break, everything seemed big and shiny and bright and new. I was a week into being Editor-in-Chief, and nothing had collapsed yet. I was visiting Los Angeles to see where I’d be living and working for the summer. I was going to see a magic show and head back to school to congratulate

I cannot wait to walk to class

Cate Von Dohlen | Friday, April 24, 2020

When I arrived at Notre Dame as a freshman, I thought walking around campus to class was so fun. It was on these walks from the random science building to O’Shag to DeBart where I nurtured friendships from Welcome Weekend, my dorm and anywhere else I seemed to meet people. The game of “Do they

Thank you

Mary Freeman | Friday, May 17, 2019

I have learned many things in my time here at Notre Dame. One of these is that properly expressing depth of feeling with language is entirely impossible. I could sit here and write and re-write line after line of this farewell, but no matter what I say it likely will fall short of expressing how

An open letter to the entire campus

Letter to the Editor | Monday, April 29, 2019

Last August, 15 of us walked onto this beautiful campus as a part of a new program called the Inspired Leadership Initiative. “Many” years have passed since we were undergraduate students ourselves, and we were unsure of what to expect as we attended classes with you all. Some of us had never stepped foot at

To my “Sunny”

Mariah Rush | Tuesday, April 2, 2019

This past week I spent a good chunk of my time trying to work Stevie Wonder’s rendition of the song “Sunny” into my theology paper — we were supposed to compare a piece of art to a biblical passage. While I don’t think my paper went over very well, I did spend some time thinking

Practicing gratitude

Campus Ministry | Monday, March 4, 2019

It finally happened. After months and months, it finally clicked. For two years, each time our now three-year-old daughter was given something, whether it be a toy, candy, crayon, coloring book, tissue or whatever, either my wife or I would say the same phrase, “Felicity, what do you say?” “Thank you… (insert giver’s name here).”

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
