We love Dr. Stanisic as much as he loved us

Letter to the Editor | Monday, April 17, 2023

Last Tuesday, the sudden, unexpected death of Professor Michael Stanisic left the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering (AME) department reeling. In ongoing conversations among the AME department this week, Dr. Stanisic is warmly remembered and deeply missed, particularly among senior undergraduate students. Holding our class to a high standard, Dr. Stanisic shaped us into attentive, analytical

In memory of Doc

Letter to the Editor | Monday, April 17, 2023

I can’t say I’m the best person to write this, given that I’m a mechanical engineering graduate, and engineers aren’t exactly known for their prowess in writing. However, I feel that someone should, so I’ll give it my best shot. We all just lost a truly great man. Professor Michael “Doc” Stanisic was a man

‘Aftersun’: Parenthood and grief

Claire Lyons | Friday, January 27, 2023

“Aftersun” is the most poignant and sensitive portrait of parenthood, depression and grief that I have ever seen. The movie follows a grown-up Sophie as she recalls her last vacation with her father, Calum. Sophie, for the majority of the movie, is a precocious 11-year-old who is oblivious to the private emotional struggles of her

What ‘Coco’ has taught me

Gabriel Zarazua | Monday, September 26, 2022

Believe me, I get it. Here’s another piece on Coco! Has it been talked about numerous times since its release in 2017? Absolutely, but for good reason. Being Mexican-American myself, I was skeptical at first when Disney announced this film. I thought right away it would be a stereotypical Hispanic film that the majority of

Joan Didion: Keenly seeing the common

Claire Lyons | Tuesday, January 11, 2022

Literary legend Joan Didion passed away shortly before last Christmas at the age of 87. As a prolific writer and one of the pioneers of the New Journalism literary movement, she was dubbed “one of the most original voices in modern American literature.” She leaves behind a large canon of work varying from genre-bending fiction

Still ‘Incredibly Close’ to the pain of 9/11

Genevieve Coleman | Friday, September 10, 2021

As we approach the twentieth anniversary of 9/11, I wanted to think back to a story that has stuck with me since I read it three years ago: Jonathan Safran Foer’s 2005 novel, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” The novel’s protagonist, Oskar Schell, is a nine-year-old boy determined to keep the memory of his father

Observer Editorial: In the wake of tragedy

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, January 31, 2020

We write this editorial with heavy hearts. Last week, we lost a member of the Notre Dame family. We are grieving with our community at this difficult time, and in particular extend our condolences to the Jerry family, Annrose’s friends, the Breen-Phillips Hall community and the Folk Choir. But know when tragedy strikes, the tri-campus

The timing of grief

Blake Ziegler | Wednesday, December 4, 2019

On Monday, I recited the Mourner’s Kaddish, a Jewish prayer in memory of the dead. Exactly one year ago, I recited the same prayer after I had a lost a loved one that I held dear to my heart. For personal reasons, I will not delve too far, but I should note that this woman’s

‘Fleabag’ scratches an itch for comedy-seeking audiences

Caroline Lezny | Wednesday, September 18, 2019

“I sometimes worry I’d be less of a feminist if I had bigger tits,” Fleabag says in the midst of a silent Quaker meeting. This scene provides the opening of the fourth episode of the show’s most recent season. As shocking as her comment is, Fleabag’s inappropriate outburst is perfectly characteristic of the lascivious humor

‘Tis a time for taking

Gary Caruso | Thursday, December 6, 2018

In this loveliest of seasons when our hearts and homes have traditionally been filled with peace, joy and happiness, the last 10-day span has become a time of loss for me. It began with the recent passing of my 14-year-old (101 in dog years) German Shepherd named Peso. Then our 41st President George H.W. Bush

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
