For the Outsiders

Kate Casper | Tuesday, February 21, 2023

I remember it clear as day: The grass was yellowing, becoming more straw-like, and the fireflies by the creek were nowhere to be found, probably hibernating or doing whatever fireflies do when summer ends. Practice had just ended and the moms were too busy shepherding groups of girls into heavily bumper-stickered minivans to notice me

20 songs about age 20

Maggie Eastland | Thursday, October 6, 2022

I may not be a teenager anymore, but I refuse to enter the “twenty-something-I-don’t-know-what-I’m-doing-with-my-life” genre just yet. Please reference Evan McKenna’s “22 songs about being 22” for such musings. Twenty is an age still ripe for blissful ignorance, and these songs are doing their best to tap into that. Raise a glass (of North Dining

Goshdarnit, I’m a puppy — why it feels so embarrassing to be a Good Girl

Julianna Conley | Wednesday, February 23, 2022

Last year I was participating in a virtual internship when, in a classic Zoom silence-filling tactic, we were asked to share what we had for breakfast. The grid on my computer lit up with choruses of “toast,” “yogurt,” and “pancakes,” everyone nodding politely but with relative disinterest.  When I shared that I ate cereal for

Full esteem ahead

Julianna Conley | Wednesday, September 22, 2021

Two summers ago, I spent my days as a camp counselor, first at Notre Dame’s Summer Scholars Program and next at my local church camp. During my time at Notre Dame, I counseled 14 high school girls. Only a couple years younger than me, these girls were smart, funny, beautiful and much, much cooler than

Growing up

Allison Thornton | Tuesday, April 28, 2020

When I was younger, the question of “what I wanted to be when I grew up” was always something I looked forward to answering. Because when I was six years old, the answer came so easily to me and I was excited to tell everyone. I wanted to become an archaeologist, who was also a

Minty fresh

Julianna Conley | Thursday, November 14, 2019

Like many ridiculously attractive young adults in coming-of-age films, I changed a lot this semester. That’s right, ladies and gentlemen: I’ve officially made the switch to mint toothpaste. For readers lacking intimate knowledge of my teeth brushing habits, I’ve spent the last 19 years polishing my pearly whites with Disney Princess bubblegum. An ardent opponent

Rex Orange County, ‘Pony’ at heart

Matthew Kellenberg | Thursday, November 7, 2019

Three albums, two collaborations with Tyler, the Creator and one record deal in, Rex Orange County has hit his stride in the music industry. But the 21-year-old is in no hurry to grow up. “Pony,” Rex’s third and latest album, sees the singer-songwriter reining himself in as he rounds the corner on adulthood, yearning for

‘Twin Fantasy (Face to Face)’: look away from the mirror and into another’s eyes

Mike Donovan | Monday, February 26, 2018

A few days ago, a friend of mine sent me a text. I won’t transpose it here since his writing style (comprised entirely of capital letters and misspelled expletives) may not be fit to print, but I will give you the gist. My friend, a musician and Car Seat Headrest early adopter, listened to the

The price you pay to grow up

Letter to the Editor | Monday, September 5, 2016

After not seeing me for almost a year, my mom came to Notre Dame to stay with me for six weeks this summer. Overjoyed by her visit, I neglected some problems until we started to live together. Looking back, I paid the price I have to pay to grow up: to realize that your parents are

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
