From the Archives: The monstrous legends of the 1970s

Uyen Le, Chris Russo, Spencer Kelly and Christina Cefalu | Monday, October 11, 2021

As Halloween approaches, pumpkins are carved, costumes are crafted and ghost stories are circulated. October also always brings an opportunity to explore the tri-campus community’s haunted grounds, with the ghost of Washington Hall and the spirits of Saint Mary’s documented in past autumn editions. This year, our team shifted to hunting monsters. And interestingly, so

Halloween Essentials, Vol. 1: Slashers

Justin George | Tuesday, October 5, 2021

Halloween Essentials is a weekly column in the month of October by Scene Writer (and Resident Spooky Boi) Justin George. Celebrate the season with his horror movie recs.  It’s the most wonderful time of the year: Spooky Season™, and nothing screams Spooky Season quite like a horror film. ‘Malignant’: James Wan’s next cult classic?

JP Spoonmore | Wednesday, September 15, 2021

From start to finish, James Wan’s new film “Malignant” pushes further into insanity through textbook scares and exemplary body horror. With great reveals, a bizarrely bombastic score and creepy action-set-pieces, this film achieves what every 90s horror flick wished it could be. Even the most absurd feels par for the course in its comically double-downed

From the Archives: The spirits of Saint Mary’s College

Evan McKenna and Jim Moster | Friday, October 30, 2020

In October of last year, the From the Archives team covered the story of the ghost of Washington Hall, arguably the most well-known supernatural story stemming from the tri-campus community.  But while Notre Dame’s supernatural claim to fame is a Travel Channel feature of its most prominent ghost, Saint Mary’s bests the University with its

Colleen Fischer | Friday, October 30, 2020

Last year, the Notre Dame music scene was defined by sweaty, damp basements and crowded backyards — bodies slammed together in spontaneous mosh pits as students blared rock, indie and punk music from their instruments. As students came back under new circumstances this semester, they wanted to recreate this student-centered space in a safe way.

‘Hubie Halloween’: Trick instead of treat

Sophia Michetti | Thursday, October 22, 2020

Slapstick comedy is hard to pull off. With too many characters or a joke that pushes it a bit too far, the entire movie can be thrown off balance if a writer relies too heavily on physical comedy. Unfortunately, Adam Sandler’s Netflix Halloween flick “Hubie Halloween” flops for this very reason. There is hardly any

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
