‘The Last of Us’: Infectious heartbreak

Gabi Woodward | Friday, March 24, 2023

HBO’s “The Last of Us” has always remained in the back of my mind, ever since it was announced that one of my favorite video games would be adapted into a TV show in November 2020. The excitement that it created festered and grew, taking over my brain leading into this Jan., when the first

‘You can’t ever say you haven’t been told’: My love letter to ‘The Sopranos’

Stephen Viz | Thursday, January 26, 2023

Television, in particular paid programming television, has seen a cinematic revival since the turn of the twenty-first century. While once belittled as the little brother of the silver screen, the current landscape of television has changed drastically. No longer do actors smirk at the idea of taking on TV projects, but rather embrace it in

The romantic pirates in ‘Our Flag Means Death’

JP Spoonmore | Tuesday, April 5, 2022

HBO’s newest comedy “Our Flag Means Death” parodies the absurd life of gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and his antics that impress the terrifying legend of the seven seas, Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). With a merry crew of comedians in front and behind the camera, the show’s comedy is packed tighter than a powder keg

‘Euphoria’ season 2: ‘Trashy’ in the most beautiful way

JP Spoonmore | Wednesday, March 16, 2022

Now that the smoke from its season finale has finally cleared, it is time to search the rubble for why “Euphoria” has turned so suddenly into its original season’s antithesis. Once a serious look at youth and love to an absolute joke, the show doesn’t seem to realize that its second season has audiences laughing

Claire Lyons | Friday, September 17, 2021

Lovers of sophisticated divorce dramas — rejoice! Anyone who enjoyed the Oscar-nominated “Marriage Story,” “Blue Valentine” or “Her” will be enthralled by HBO’s highly anticipated “Scenes from a Marriage” miniseries. The first episode, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, finally aired on the network (and its streaming service, HBOMax) last Sunday. Director Hagai Levi’s reboot

Welcome to adulthood, ‘Shiva Baby!’

Ryan Israel and Mariah Rush | Friday, April 9, 2021

Someone’s died. You’re not really sure who. A fourth cousin? A family friend twice removed? It’s probably a great-great-great-someone, that’s for sure. The thing is, it doesn’t really matter. Your parents, who dragged you unwillingly with the authority of some moral high ground, force you through the doors, and you’re faced with the familiar anxiety

Editor’s notes: HBO’s ‘Industry’ is hot

Ryan Israel | Friday, February 5, 2021

When I love something, I write about it — not quite love letters, but tributes. I love when celebrities can be connected to Notre Dame, so I draw the dots — and then connect them — between Taylor Swift and the Golden Dome. Or, I obsess over Leonardo DiCaprio wearing a hat. There are a

Coming of age with David Byrne’s ‘American Utopia’

Colleen Fischer | Friday, October 23, 2020

If I was in a coming-of-age film, it would open with me slamming the door shut and blaring something David Byrne wrote. There is something about David Byrne and Talking Heads that makes my brain make sense. I was waiting for the film version of “America Utopia” for over a year, and it was worth

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
