Grace McDermott | Thursday, October 3, 2019

In the 2016 presidential election, Donald Trump won the White House on the strength of his Electoral College triumph, though he lost the national popular vote to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Since then, the legitimacy of the Electoral College has been the subject of national debate. On Wednesday, ND Votes kicked off this year’s iteration

Charitable views

Raymond Ramirez | Friday, January 18, 2019

Some years ago, after decades in the impenetrable thicket of corporate law, I found myself at a dark and worrisome place. I questioned whether my efforts and talents were being used for good, especially after the pursuit of financial rewards led to a series of lucrative but unsatisfying jobs. I consulted with family and friends

Meryl Streep and progressive ignorance

Eddie Damstra | Wednesday, January 18, 2017

The most notable moment from this year’s Golden Globes was undoubtedly Meryl Streep’s speech. In her speech, Meryl condemned the behavior of Donald Trump — more specifically, criticizing the president-elect for his disgusting mocking of a disabled reporter in November 2015. The speech drew a standing ovation from those in attendance and much praise from

It doesn’t matter who wins

Jack Rooney | Wednesday, November 9, 2016

It doesn’t matter who wins this presidential election. I’ll be following the results from Ireland, where polls won’t close until 11 p.m. at the earliest, so I have to submit this column before I know who wins anyway. But it really doesn’t matter. In most election cycles, politicians and pundits frame the race for the

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
