‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’: Blood, gore and really fun horror

Justin George | Monday, February 21, 2022

“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is the ninth film of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre (TCM) franchise and third film to bear its name. (Seriously, stop naming sequels the same thing as the original.) The “plot” follows a group of influencers who buy up the majority of a small town in rural Texas to … do something

‘Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched’: A deep dive into the history of folk horror

Justin George | Thursday, January 27, 2022

Folk horror is a rather nebulous subgenre, traditionally lacking a hard and fast definition. However, for the purposes of this article, folk horror can be defined as horror media that deals with folklore, witchcraft/paganism, themes of power and isolation and often involves some form of ancient ritual or magic(k). In the ’60s and ’70s, folk

‘Nightmare Alley’: a riveting neo-noir horror thriller

Justin George | Friday, January 14, 2022

Horror cinema has an inexplicable connection to carnivals. “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” established the trope and classics such as “Freaks,” “The Man Who Laughs” and “Carnival of Souls” cemented its status as a horror staple that spans across decades of horror cinema. Guillermo Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” is a spectacular new addition to the

Are you looking for an atypical horror movie? “Hereditary” encompasses a watching experience that keeps viewers on the edge of their seat waiting for a jump scare that will never come. Directed by Ari Aster, “Hereditary,” depicts the story of the Graham family unraveling spine chilling secrets about the ancestry of their family. But what

Laughing in the face of fear

Nicole Simon | Wednesday, October 24, 2018

I can count the number of horror movies I’ve seen on one hand. Not only am I not a particular fan of the genre, but I actively try to avoid it. It started in middle school, when I went to see “Mama” and hated every minute of the movie. I couldn’t finish “Jumanji” until 10th

After suffering from the day-to-day terror of looming deadlines, finding your roommate’s dirty underwear on the floor and getting a horrible class registration time, Halloween provides relief: The goblins and ghouls attached to the holiday’s spookiness are pleasantly detached from reality. Today, Scene shares their favorite horror movies that are sure to get the skin

Toil and Trouble: A conversation with Robert Eggers, Director of ‘The Witch’

Nick Laureano | Thursday, March 3, 2016

I’m generally skeptical of movie review aggregators like Rotten Tomatoes — quantitative measures like the algorithms applied by Rotten Tomatoes rob our appreciation and understanding of the movies. There are moments, however, when sites like Rotten Tomatoes are essential to understanding a movie. The release of Robert Eggers’ new horror movie, “The Witch,” ushered in one

Alexandra Lowery | Monday, November 3, 2014

Editor’s note: This article is part of a weekly column in which a writer introduces an online-streaming film or television show each Thursday, then gives critical analysis the following Monday.  Imagine you and your friends gathering around the futon late one school night, lamenting the lack of decent horror films on Netflix. You scroll through the

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
