‘Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched’: A deep dive into the history of folk horror

Justin George | Thursday, January 27, 2022

Folk horror is a rather nebulous subgenre, traditionally lacking a hard and fast definition. However, for the purposes of this article, folk horror can be defined as horror media that deals with folklore, witchcraft/paganism, themes of power and isolation and often involves some form of ancient ritual or magic(k). In the ’60s and ’70s, folk

‘Nightmare Alley’: a riveting neo-noir horror thriller

Justin George | Friday, January 14, 2022

Horror cinema has an inexplicable connection to carnivals. “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari” established the trope and classics such as “Freaks,” “The Man Who Laughs” and “Carnival of Souls” cemented its status as a horror staple that spans across decades of horror cinema. Guillermo Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” is a spectacular new addition to the

‘Hellbound’: Fate or something more

Rachel Hartmann | Wednesday, December 1, 2021

In “Hellbound,” the world is thrown into chaos when huge, terrifying demons appear and drag sinners to hell. These demons appear on the date and time specified by a mythical creature who appeared to the sinners before. As these demons appear more and more, religious extremism grows as individuals call these events the will of

‘Halloween Kills’ all hope in the franchise

Justin George | Friday, November 5, 2021

Do you ever feel like you’ve been cheated? As the crowd streamed out of my local cinema after the 6 p.m. showing of “Halloween Kills,” I began to ponder where David Gordon Green and company went wrong. Green seemed to have the “Halloween” franchise under control with the release of 2018’s “Halloween,” which was by

‘Annette’: A love story characterized by death

Lexi Kilcoin | Monday, October 11, 2021

Warning: This review contains spoilers Oh, where to begin. Adam Driver has seen his fair share of intense, psychologically unnerving roles, the most well-known being Kylo Ren. However, his role in a recently-released musical, “Annette,” has shown a deeper, more disturbing facet of Driver’s skills. “Annette” might be a love story; or, it might be

‘Brand New Cherry Flavor’: Blood, gore, magic, sex and kittens

Justin George | Monday, September 27, 2021

New Netflix limited series “Brand New Cherry Flavor” is a harrowing story following a young filmmaker as she navigates the process of securing a deal for her first Hollywood project. Showrunners Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion combine visceral gore effects, brilliant performances, excellent editing and a gripping plot to create a highly bingeable final product.

‘Malignant’: James Wan’s next cult classic?

JP Spoonmore | Wednesday, September 15, 2021

From start to finish, James Wan’s new film “Malignant” pushes further into insanity through textbook scares and exemplary body horror. With great reveals, a bizarrely bombastic score and creepy action-set-pieces, this film achieves what every 90s horror flick wished it could be. Even the most absurd feels par for the course in its comically double-downed

‘Candyman’: Resurrection, evolution and gentrification

JP Spoonmore | Tuesday, August 31, 2021

Deep beneath the rubble and ashes of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green lies a secret. Its history is written on the very souls of its last remaining residents, always lurking behind them. His face may change over time, but the name will always be remembered, along with that bloody hook. After almost 30 years since his original summoning,

‘The Devils’ and my search for cinema’s hidden masterpieces

Justin George | Tuesday, April 20, 2021

A brief primer on region coding before we begin: DVD and Blu-ray discs are coded by manufacturers to only work on players from certain regions, allowing for healthy competition amongst disc manufacturers around the world. However, this acts as a barrier to what film consumers and collectors can obtain. Region coding is the bane of

‘The Empty Man’: The cult horror hit you’ve never heard of

Justin George | Friday, April 9, 2021

David Prior’s “The Empty Man” hit theaters in October 2020 and despite being a film by 20th Century, it received no advertising or fanfare whatsoever, which naturally resulted in the film having a remarkably short theatrical run. There is no logical explanation as to why the film is relevant today. However, “The Empty Man” has

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
