Country club Christianity

Dane Sherman | Wednesday, October 5, 2022

We stand on the shoulders of underdogs. Notre Dame began as a school for the poor, Irish, Catholic immigrants that were not welcome anywhere else. At every turn, we have been counted out for being “too Catholic,” in the middle of nowhere, or as “just a football school.” For the game against Berkeley, one of

We’re defending who?

Letter to the Editor | Thursday, February 17, 2022

“We’re defending YOU.” The Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) — a “legal organization committed to protecting religious freedom, free speech, marriage and family, parental rights, and the sanctity of life” based in Scottsdale, Arizona — plasters this tagline on their website. This mission may seem innocuous at first glance, but even a surface-level exploration of the

To PC or not to PC

Alexa Schlaerth | Friday, January 28, 2022

When we discuss politically correct, or “PC” language, we inherently examine the culture and/or movements that have created the new and more progressive terminology. How do we approach topics like these while maintaining our values of tolerance, acceptance, equality and free speech? Generally speaking, the terms in this prompt reflect a trend toward non-gendered language:

Observer Editorial: Do more than denounce

Observer Editorial Board | Friday, April 9, 2021

Antisemitism is on the rise in America. A recent Anti-Defamation League (ADL) survey found that 63% of American Jews had experienced or witnessed antisemitism over the past five years — a 10% increase since last year’s poll. And Tuesday night, antisemitism made a horrific appearance on Notre Dame’s campus, at an event hosted by the

Coping with a conservative campus

Eva Analitis | Tuesday, March 16, 2021

A TA of mine once joked during our discussion section, “I forgot. This is Notre Dame — you’re all conservatives and don’t care about people.” While the class all laughed along in good humor at what was obviously not a serious comment, there was an air of truth to this statement — an implicit acknowledgment

Civility is hard for the oppressed

Letter to the Editor | Monday, October 26, 2020

A couple weeks ago, I attended a BridgeND event that emphasized the importance of civility in political discourse. After receiving similar emails from Fr. Jenkins and my rector, I decided to see for myself as to what this meant. This BridgeND event began with an enlightening lecture about the history of voting rights, then was

We stand with all the Irish

Sydni Brooks | Tuesday, September 1, 2020

When I proudly responded “Notre Dame” to the question “Where are you going to college this fall?” during the summer of 2018, I was met with roughly the same answer from every individual who asked — “You’re going to love it there; it’s a great community.” Though I knew of Notre Dame’s caliber and nobility,

A letter for you

Letter to the Editor | Tuesday, April 28, 2020

Dear fellow Notre Dame peer, In the nicest way possible, you can do better.  As soon as I stepped on campus, I felt welcomed and at peace. Notre Dame is my new home. I am incredibly grateful for the people I’ve met, the opportunities I’ve had and the progress I’ve made during my short time

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
