Zwiller: What to watch for in NFL Week 2

Thomas Zwiller | Friday, September 16, 2022

With the conclusion of a crazy Broncos vs. Seahawks game on Monday Night, a wild Week 1 has concluded. As we head into Week 2, I wanted to take a moment to look back on Week 1 and talk about some of the oddities. Wide Receiving Struggles: New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Green Bay Packers

Matt Ryan to the Colts is a win for everyone involved

Matthew Crow | Tuesday, March 22, 2022

I was walking out of class on Monday afternoon when I saw the alert on my phone: The Falcons had traded Matt Ryan to the Colts for a third-round pick in this year’s draft. My initial reaction was sadness. As a lifelong Falcons fan, Ryan has been my favorite NFL player since I started watching

Smalstig: Quiet free agency means Colts are not contenders yet

Gehrig Smalstig | Friday, April 23, 2021

Tom Brady, Leonard Fournette, Rob Gronkowski, Tristan Wirfs, Antoine Winfield Jr. That’s the haul of starters that it took to push the Tampa Bay Buccaneers into Super Bowl contention, where they would ultimately emerge victorious. That is the result of a very busy free agency, accompanied by one of the better draft classes in the

Zwiller: The curious case of Carson Wentz

Thomas Zwiller | Tuesday, February 23, 2021

In my columns detailing the state of the quarterback market, I had connected the Colts to Carson Wentz, saying that dumping him was the best move for the Eagles. However, I thought it would be a poor signing for the Colts, as they might have to give up too much to get him. I ended

Ward: Sports should be less serious and funnier

Jimmy Ward | Wednesday, February 17, 2021

I’ve only legitimately been writing about sports in this paper for around two and a half years now. But I’ve loved sports for a long time, and they have always seemed to have had a presence in my life. Not to get soppy in the wake of Valentine’s Day, but no matter what stage of

Observer Roundtable: ND-Clemson, Cocktail Party and Michigan looking to rebound

Nate Moller, Patrick Gallagher, Aidan Thomas, Liam Coolican and Dominic Gibson | Friday, November 6, 2020

Last week saw a lot of blowouts, and as such, upset picks were difficult to come by. None of our writers successfully notched an upset prediction, leading to a low scoring week. For the second straight week, Nate Moller was our highest scorer, collecting nine of 12 possible points outside the upset prediction. He’s challenging

Ward: Adam Vinatieri should have retired last year

Jimmy Ward | Tuesday, November 12, 2019

Let me start by saying I am a Colts fan, a huge Colts fan. I was born in 1999, just when Peyton Manning was starting to take the league by storm. I have lived just outside of Indianapolis my whole life. I have plenty of Colts memorabilia at home, including — much to the dismay

Ward: Don’t blame Andrew Luck for retiring

Jimmy Ward | Tuesday, August 27, 2019

In the 2011 NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts began to drift towards mediocrity. Fresh off of a Super Bowl appearance at the end of the 2009 season and a promising future on the horizon, I sat at home every weekend that year wondering if the Colts would ever be as good as they once were

Mazurek: Lucks needs help

Marek Mazurek | Monday, October 3, 2016

Every Sunday I turn on the TV and every Sunday I feel bad for the guy. I watch him pour his heart out for 60 minutes every game, but every game he gets beat up and hit, and his receivers drop passes, and his team loses. I feel bad for Andrew Luck. Luck was supposed

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
