The Brooklyn-based yodeler: Mike Donovan and The Shifties

Willoughby Thom | Monday, September 7, 2020

Michael Donovan, the Brooklyn-based yodeler. I remember the first time ever meeting Mike “Donny” Donovan (’20), former Scene Editor and WVFI Station Manager, at my first Scene meeting in 2019. I vividly recall entering the dark Observer office in the basement of South Dining Hall and seeing a tall, lanky guy sitting at the cluttered

I just wanted to be one of The Strokes

Mike Donovan | Friday, April 17, 2020

“I just wanted to be one of the Strokes,” Alex Turner sings to introduce his meandering through the “Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.” Alex and I both. One indie-tinged suburbanite among millions, I worshipped the understated, airtight and incontrovertibly analogue articulations of 2001’s “Is This It” and 2003’s “Room on Fire” as the epitome of

Big Thief return to form, Earth on ‘Two Hands’

Matthew Kellenberg | Thursday, October 17, 2019

Fans of indie rock band Big Thief were surprised last July to receive unmarked, unannounced packages at their doors. Those fans had purchased vinyl copies of the group’s third album, “U.F.O.F.,” back in May, but these new packages contained something different: a two-song record, etched only with the date 10/11/19. The first song on the

Martha’s ‘Love Keeps Kicking’ upstream

Mike Donovan | Tuesday, April 9, 2019

Culture favors the futurist, the sample-heavy synth pop, spliced together post-modern masterpieces of poetic beauty and electronic grace. The charts — and the internet news feeds — rise and fall in response to the dexterity of the musically inclined computer wiz, master of software, producer extraordinaire. Guitars, tube amps, lovelorn feelings. These are nothing more

Broken Social Scene builds steadily on ‘Let’s Try the After (Vol. 1)’

Matthew Kellenberg | Thursday, February 28, 2019

“The Pitchfork Effect”: When a Pitchfork review, typically given on a debut or early album, appreciably alters the trajectory of a given artist. Examples include Arcade Fire (“Funeral”: 9.7/10), Bon Iver (“For Emma, Forever Ago”: 8.1/10), Travis Morrison (“Travistan”: 0.0/10). The same can be said for the indie-pop/rock project Broken Social Scene. Its 2003 debut,

Our Scene writers offer their impressions of some of the concert’s best moments. A breath of fresh air: Indie rock bands Young the Giant and Sure Sure to perform at Stepan Center

Ryan Israel | Thursday, February 21, 2019

It’s time to trade in your cowboy hat and boots for a pair of sunglasses and sandals. So far, it has been the year of the cowboy for Notre Dame musical performances, with country legend Garth Brooks performing at Notre Dame Stadium and Tim McGraw slated to perform at Purcell Pavilion. However, this Friday, two

Girlpool’s ‘What Chaos Is Imaginary’ hosts a wedding in the seams

Mike Donovan | Wednesday, February 20, 2019

“Before the World was Big” — big enough for Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad of Girlpool to have a voice of their own — the duo had to share. “Before the World was Big,” it was impossible to tell where Tucker’s voice ended and Tividad’s began. “Wearing matching dresses before the world was big,” Tucker

Panda Bear’s ‘Buoys’ is a miss for Noah Lennox

Ethan Utley | Wednesday, February 13, 2019

Panda Bear is the pseudonym of Noah Lennox, an electronic experimental-pop superstar. Whether he is working on his solo project, or with his more well-known group Animal Collective, Lennox masterfully sews hallucinatory undertones into noise-heavy pop. Somewhere between The Beach Boys and Yves Tumor, Lennox shines a chipper light onto an often profound and overwhelming

Finstas and rap music: Yung Lean as Jonatan Leandoer127

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, February 6, 2019

Jonatan Aron Leandoer Håstad’s latest album, “Nectar,” is to his musical career what a finsta is to a rinsta.  For readers without Instagram accounts, let me explain: the “finsta” is the latest social media trend that has captured the hearts of young people everywhere. Finsta, an abbreviated term for “fake Instagram,” stands in contrast to the

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
