Do the next right thing

While I was living at home this summer, my mom convinced me to watch “Frozen 2” with her — which, for the record, is much better than the first “Frozen” movie. I could write an analysis of every song in the second one for the scene department, but I’ll spare you (for now) and limit

Defense struggles in key third-down situations

Zach Klonsinski | Tuesday, December 1, 2015

STANFORD, Calif. — Despite holding the Pac-12’s record holder for all-purpose yards in a single season in check all night, the Irish defense still couldn’t find a way to stem the Cardinal attack for much of No. 6 Notre Dame’s 38-36 loss to No. 9 Stanford on Saturday night at Stanford Stadium. That defensive weakness came

Klonsinski: Irish fall short of completing fairy-tale season

Zach Klonsinski | Tuesday, December 1, 2015

STANFORD, Calif. — Saturday night we watched what seemingly could have been a dream season, the type they make movies about, come to an arguably unfitting end at Stanford Stadium. Instead of defying all the odds, overcoming a staggering amount of adversity and making a run at college football’s greatest prize, Notre Dame had its

Brothers in Arms: Joe Schmidt and Matthias Farley

Greg Hadley | Friday, November 20, 2015

They’re young, relatively speaking. Joe Schmidt and Matthias Farley are both 23-year-old graduate students. They hold degrees from Notre Dame: Farley in film, television and theatre, Schmidt in management-entrepreneurship. Farley owns a dog, Harper. Schmidt co-hosts a radio show. They have played a combined 90 games for Notre Dame. But when they’re waiting around to

Green: New assistants play crucial part in breakout seasons

Mary Green | Friday, November 20, 2015

We’ve talked enough about Notre Dame’s “breakout players” of 2015. You might say it’s impossible to talk too much about players like DeShone Kizer, who had a lock on the third-string quarterback slot just six months ago, C.J. Prosise, whose emergence in the backfield has made him one of Notre Dame’s most invaluable assets, or

Eagles offense, defense occupy opposite ranks

Brian Plamondon | Friday, November 20, 2015

It’s always a good sign for a football team when its offense gains more than its defense on average. For most teams this season, those numbers fall somewhere around 400 yards per game. Boston College is unique, however — its offense is dead last in the country, gaining 277 yards per game, while its defense is

Head to Head: Notre Dame vs. Boston College

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, November 20, 2015

EAGLES PASSING Boston College’s four quarterbacks this year — yes, count them, four — have combined to complete just 97 passes in 10 games. Take away the Eagles’ two games against FCS opposition and it paints a pretty grim picture: When facing FBS foes, Boston College has just two more completed passes (71) than punts

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
