Padanilam: Irish took important, necessary step Saturday

Benjamin Padanilam | Monday, September 25, 2017

EAST LANSING, Mich. — On paper, a 20-point victory might seem to pale in comparison to 33- or 29-point victories. But looking as something on paper can be deceiving. On Friday, I wrote that Notre Dame’s 49-20 win over Boston College wasn’t as good as it looked on paper. The success in the running game

Irish focus on turnovers pays off against Spartans

Elizabeth Greason | Sunday, September 24, 2017

EAST LANSING, Mich. — It looked like a touchdown as Spartans junior running back LJ Scott crossed the goal line with six minutes remaining in the second quarter. But as Notre Dame junior cornerback Shaun Crawford knew, it wasn’t. It was the third of three turnovers the Irish (3-1) snatched up during their 38-18 win over Michigan State

Notre Dame tops Michigan State behind balanced team effort

Benjamin Padanilam | Sunday, September 24, 2017

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Football is a game of inches. Michigan State and LJ Scott learned that lesson the hard way Saturday night. With just over six minutes left in the first half, Notre Dame held a 21-7 lead over the Spartans (2-1). But the Spartans were driving, putting the Irish (3-1) on their heels.

Crawford looks to excel on field and leave injuries behind

Elizabeth Greason | Friday, September 22, 2017

Fast and free. It’s the mantra junior cornerback Shaun Crawford plays by. But his first two seasons at Notre Dame can be described as exactly the opposite. Just weeks after arriving on campus his freshman year, Crawford tore his ACL in practice, sidelining him for the season. After battling back from a season-ending ACL tear

Irish continue to hone in on offensive identity

Tobias Hoonhout | Friday, September 22, 2017

The look of the stat line says it all. In 2016, although the Irish ended the year with their first losing season under Brian Kelly, Notre Dame’s quarterback wasn’t the issue. Former quarterback DeShone Kizer did as much as he could for the Irish on the field, throwing for almost 3,000 yards and more touchdowns

Padanilam: Irish shouldn’t settle for mediocrity

Benjamin Padanilam | Friday, September 22, 2017

“The Georgia loss didn’t snowball.” Fair. “The Irish proved that they can beat the teams that they should, even when they struggle.” Accurate. “That’s a big deal.” Is it? My colleague, Daniel O’Boyle, offered those takes in his column following Notre Dame’s 49-20 win over Boston College last weekend. And for the most part, I

Notre Dame buckles down for Michigan State defense

Daniel O'Boyle | Friday, September 22, 2017

“I think they’re good. I think the offensive line is improved from last year.” “It’s interesting you say that because they have four new starters on their offensive line. How are they better than last year’s line, which was a little bit more experienced?” “Just from watching them, I think that’s just kind of what

Michigan State offers Notre Dame chance to sure up cornerback position

Marek Mazurek | Friday, September 22, 2017

Three games into the 2017 season and Notre Dame’s defense is giving up 18.7 points and 352 yards per game. Those stats are solid, but not outstanding. But combined with Irish defensive coordinator Mike Elko’s presence on the recruiting trail, they may be enough to bring high-caliber defensive recruits to South Bend, according to Blue

Head to Head: Notre Dame vs. Michigan State

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, September 22, 2017

Spartans Passing The Irish have faced a raft of untested quarterbacks so far this season, with Boston College redshirt freshman Anthony Brown the only quarterback this season to have started before facing the Irish. That will continue this weekend, as Spartans redshirt-sophomore quarterback Brian Lewerke brings only four starts worth of experience before taking on

Joseph R. Biden has become the second Catholic President in United States history, but his position on abortion is “one that cannot be condoned” according to Rev. Robert Dowd.

“Other bishops think that, because he’s a conscientious Catholic whose faith is obviously important to him, we should strike a more positive tone, particularly at the outset of his presidency. After all, in many ways Biden’s positions are more in line with Catholic teaching than Trump’s, particularly when it comes to migrants, refugees, climate issues, poverty and inequality,” Dowd continued.
