Notre Dame caps regular season with commanding win over Stanford

Connor Mulvena | Tuesday, December 3, 2019

On a dreary, cold and rainy Palo Alto afternoon, one which held firm expectations of a commanding Irish victory, things began mysteriously for Notre Dame. The defense — the unit which has undergirded this team’s strength all year — gave an underperforming Stanford offense headway which it didn’t particularly deserve. But in the end, it

Irish defense underlines Notre Dame’s success at Stanford

Connor Mulvena | Tuesday, December 3, 2019

In a season with some unexpected twists, and probably the same amount of expected narratives, the final game seemed to encapsulate that which Notre Dame is and has been for the past two seasons on the field: a team which builds primarily from its defensive prowess.  Stanford’s first offensive drive, the first drive of the

Adams: Giving thanks for the 2019 season

Hayden Adams | Tuesday, December 3, 2019

After Notre Dame’s senior day victory against Boston College, I wrote a column expressing my frustration for the game despite the 40-7 result in Notre Dame’s favor. I’ll be honest, I was looking for a reason to be negative. However, given that is Thanksgiving, I thought I would write this column in the spirit of

Hayden Adams | Friday, November 29, 2019

It’s the season of giving thanks, and Irish sophomore receiver Lawrence Keys III has a lot to be thankful for. “Honestly, I’m thankful for everything,” Keys said. “These guys, they’re a wonderful group of guys. I love them to death. I’m willing to do anything for them, because I know they’re willing to do anything

The Stanford Cardinal are preparing to wrap up what has been a difficult season on Saturday playing host to the Irish. The program will go bowl-ineligible for the first time in 11 years and has failed to win eight games for the first time since David Shaw was hired in 2011. He finds himself in

Staff Predictions: Stanford

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, November 29, 2019

Charlotte Edmonds — Managing Editor California over Thanksgiving always makes me nervous. Blame it on jet lag or the post-Thanksgiving lull, but there’s no denying this game has proven disastrous for Notre Dame teams in the past (e.g. 2015). Not only have the Irish historically struggled to win in Palo Alto, but even just last

Charlotte Edmonds | Friday, November 29, 2019

Although the regular season is drawing to a close, Notre Dame continues on the recruiting trail as they prepare to travel to Palo Alto, California, to take on Stanford. According to Bryan Driskell of Sports Illustrated, Saturday’s game against the Cardinal could send an important message for the state of the program to prospective players.

Geyer: An expression of gratitude

Ellen Geyer | Friday, November 29, 2019

I am not an optimistic sports fan. Having grown up in Ohio, can you blame me? Cavs, Browns, Blue Jackets — I’m not sure you can pick a worse state for professional sports than mine. Loving losing teams hardens you in a way nothing else can. As such, my eternal pessimism has always carried over

Kurt Hinish’s level head marks his leadership style

Connor Mulvena | Friday, November 29, 2019

Junior defensive lineman Kurt Hinish is a man of marked consistency and focus. The Pittsburgh native proved what a force he could be during his sophomore season, as he played a significant role in one of the most menacing front seven’s in the nation. Appearing in all 13 games, Hinish was a staple on the

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
