Wearing His Heart On His Sleeve: Tyler Newsome lives his life on and off the field with the same positive attitude, no matter what life throws his way

Tobias Hoonhout | Friday, November 9, 2018

Editor’s note: A version of this article appeared in the Sept. 21 edition of The Observer. Tyler Newsome doesn’t always get the chance to produce with the game on the line. But this past Saturday, with five seconds left in the game, the graduate student captain was tasked with punting from deep in Irish territory

Notre Dame tops Wake Forest in most successful offensive outing yet

Connor Mulvena | Sunday, September 23, 2018

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A new-looking Notre Dame offense travelled to North Carolina on Saturday, and with junior quarterback Ian Book as its leader, the Irish pummeled the high-tempo Demon Deacons. The Irish (4-0) came out aggressive with new starter Book at the helm. The junior was perfect passing on Notre Dame’s first drive, but after

Everett: Both QBs are critical to team success, but Book a better fit

Joe Everett | Saturday, September 22, 2018

Man, Ian Book loves playing on the road in Carolina. A year after the junior quarterback led Notre Dame to a 33-10 win over North Carolina last season, Book was named the starter Saturday over senior quarterback Brandon Wimbush and was again effective and efficient, throwing for 325 yards, rushing for 43 yards and accounting

Between Ian Book and running game, Irish offense reaches new heights

Connor Mulvena | Saturday, September 22, 2018

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — If the Irish weren’t decked out in gold and white, you might not have recognized them in the sweltering heat of Saturday afternoon in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mostly because the number on the scoreboard seemed a bit too high for it to be the offense we saw struggle against Ball State and

Irish fully committed to quarterback rotation

Joe Everett | Friday, September 21, 2018

It was first and goal from the Vanderbilt 2-yard line with 11:04 left in the fourth quarter, Notre Dame up 16-10. Senior quarterback Brandon Wimbush had just successfully converted a fourth down situation with a 1-yard quarterback sneak. Wimbush then ran to the sideline and junior quarterback Ian Book ran in to take his place.

Mulvena: For season to be a success, Irish require improvement and outside help

Connor Mulvena | Friday, September 21, 2018

It’s been tough to evaluate Notre Dame so far this season. After a solid week one victory against Michigan, it was too early to tell where the Irish stood among the country’s top-tier teams, especially considering that the Wolverines didn’t necessarily exceed expectations. A close call against Ball State in week two threw us all

Wake Forest aims for improved defensive effort against Notre Dame

Charlotte Edmonds | Friday, September 21, 2018

Wake Forest’s head coach Dave Clawson’s mentality heading into the game against the Irish on Saturday is simple — realistic. In his third face-off against the Notre Dame — both of which has been double digit wins for the Irish — Clawson is aware of the prestige Notre Dame carries but is undaunted, confident his

Irish continue to focus on wrapping up 2019 class

Elizabeth Greason | Friday, September 21, 2018

After a second-consecutive one-score win over an unranked team at home, the No. 8 Irish are finally hitting the road for the first time this season to take on Wake Forest. This week at the Demon Deacons (2-1, 0-1 ACC) will be a slow one in terms of recruiting for the Irish according to Blue

Head to head: Wake Forest

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, September 21, 2018

Irish Passing While Brandon Wimbush may have made a sluggish start to the season, Wake Forest’s secondary hasn’t done much to impress either. Against Boston College last week, the Demon Deacons surrendered 304 yards and five touchdowns, all over 25 yards, to Anthony Brown, who had a career day. Wimbush has only thrown one touchdown

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
