J.J. Post | Friday, November 25, 2022

Notre Dame women’s soccer will look to advance to its first College Cup since 2010 Saturday night when they take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in South Bend. The Tar Heels and Irish matchup is one of the most storied rivalries in women’s college soccer history. The two teams have played in the NCAA

“That’s why we named him the starter”: Buchner ushers in new era against the Buckeyes

Emily DeFazio | Sunday, September 4, 2022

When he was first signed at Notre Dame, quarterback Tyler Buchner’s talent was lauded as the saving grace that would replace the stability that Ian Book brought to the Irish football program during his time in the position. When the former QB1 had played out his eligibility after having been the starter for three years,

From the Archives: The Fighting Irish celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Uyen Le, Lilyann Gardner, Spencer Kelly and Thomas Dobbs | Tuesday, March 22, 2022

Notre Dame usually schedules spring break to include St. Patrick’s Day, but once every four years, students get to spend the beloved holiday on campus, where they participate in a combination of drunken antics and cultural appreciation.  In this week’s edition of From the Archives, we will take a look at what the Fighting Irish

At ‘Looking at the Stars,’ being human is a work of art

Hanna Kennedy | Monday, September 9, 2019

“We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars,” writes Oscar Wilde in the play Lady Windermere’s Fan, first performed on the London West End stage in 1892. From this quote, the Snite Museum of Art takes its inspiration for the recently opened exhibition, “‘Looking at the Stars’: Irish

Scene in South Bend: Fiddler’s Hearth

Mike Donovan | Friday, November 3, 2017

Experts position the Basque region of Spain at the forefront of progressive cuisine — lauding the region’s charismatic forays into gastronomic experimentation. Anthony Bourdain contends, “You could make the argument that there’s no better place to eat in Europe than the city of San Sebastian.” Notice that Bourdain says Europe and not The World. He

The Script deals in disappointing cliche on ‘Freedom Child’

Grace Weissend | Tuesday, September 5, 2017

From the album art to the tracks themselves, The Script is simply trying too hard on their latest effort. The Irish band’s fifth studio album, “Freedom Child,” is ridden with cliches, piano overlays and intense drumming. The fourteen tracks feel almost never ending due to the lack of differentiation among them. Past The Script albums have

Irish, the language

Caelin Miltko | Wednesday, October 5, 2016

I’m about a semester and a half from finishing a supplementary major in Irish language. It’s been a wonderful three years. I’ve had the opportunity to work with professors on anthropological research, study ancient literature, conduct my own research and spend a full 12 months in Ireland. It’s also been three years full of questions.

‘1916: The Irish Rebellion‘ a thoughtful, powerful documentary

Keely Bergin | Monday, March 14, 2016

While many on campus were packing their bags or possibly already headed home for break, “1916: The Irish Rebellion” premiered at the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center with all the pomp that it deserved. However, unless you are in an Irish class or have a professor in the Irish department, you might not have heard of it

‘A Season With Notre Dame Football’ – Episode five recap

Miko Malabute | Thursday, October 8, 2015

“You have 24 hours to celebrate a win or 24 hours to grieve over a loss,” Irish captain Sheldon Day said, following the heartbreaking loss against the Clemson Tigers. “But once those 24 hours are over, you look forward to the next game.” This week’s episode of “A Season With Notre Dame Football” put the

‘A Season With Notre Dame Football’ – Episode two recap

Miko Malabute | Thursday, September 17, 2015

Sometimes, you need to be reminded to be careful what you wish for. Although I was initially ecstatic about last week’s episode, after discussing it with friends I realized that although it was a fantastic episode for Notre Dame football fans, there was little drama or conflict to keep non-Notre Dame fans interested. Emerging from this

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
