Notre Dame meets Northwestern in Big Ten-ACC baseball showcase

Tyler Reidy | Tuesday, April 4, 2023

After ending a UNC series loss with a big win, Notre Dame baseball will wrap up its nine-game homestand when the Northwestern Wildcats (3-19, 1-2 Big Ten) make the trip around Lake Michigan to visit the Irish (14-11, 5-7 ACC). Both teams hope to build on encouraging Sunday doubleheader showings. Arnone, Martinez ready for four

Annika Herko | Friday, March 31, 2023

Notre Dame kicks off the first of a three-game series against North Carolina at home in Frank Eck Stadium Friday. Since 2015, the Irish have gone 11-5 against the Tar Heels, but lost in their matchup last year.  Although North Carolina is fresh off of a 7-12 loss to Coastal Carolina, they have had an

Ryan Murphy | Wednesday, March 29, 2023

Notre Dame baseball continued its strong homestand with a shutout victory over visiting Butler on Tuesday afternoon. Beneath sharp blue skies and a crowd of 319 at Frank Eck Stadium, the Irish topped the Bulldogs by a 4-0 score.  The Irish pitching staff was excellent while helping Notre Dame improve to a perfect 4-0 in

Irish exorcise their Louisville demons in series win

Tyler Reidy | Monday, March 27, 2023

Entering the weekend, Notre Dame baseball hadn’t taken a series from Louisville since 2009. The Cardinals made four College World Series appearances during that stretch and are currently among the nation’s top ten again. Despite the circumstances, the Irish ended the 14-year drought, stealing two of three from the sixth-ranked team in America at home

Irish baseball at bat to get back on track against Louisville

Adam Akan | Friday, March 24, 2023

Notre Dame baseball is heading into a weekend of heated ACC play at home against No. 6 Louisville. The Irish enter the game with a respectable 10-8 overall record, but a less-than-stellar 2-4 conference mark. The Cardinals will come to South Bend with a dominating 18-2 season record, starting 2-1 in the ACC. For a

Irish baseball concludes road stretch with mixed results

Tyler Reidy | Tuesday, March 21, 2023

Notre Dame baseball saw a little bit of everything over the last week and a half. Playing through shootouts, blowouts and nail-biters, the Irish posted an even 4-4 record during spring break. Notre Dame got its first look at ACC competition — visiting Georgia Tech and now-No. 2 Wake Forest — and also played midweek

Stiffler era starts sour in series loss at Lipscomb

Tyler Reidy | Tuesday, February 21, 2023

Few opening weekends in recent memory were more anticipated than the one this year for Notre Dame baseball. After improbably reaching the College World Series last year and hiring new head coach Shawn Stiffler in the offseason, the Irish took the field on Friday with plenty of excitement behind them. Fifty hours later, hope turned

Notre Dame baseball preview: redefining the attitude around Irish baseball

Adam Akan | Friday, February 10, 2023

When one thinks of Notre Dame athletics, they are likely to conjure up images of a kickoff at Notre Dame Stadium, a packed Purcell Pavilion erupting after another Notre Dame three-pointer or the gold helmets skating about Compton Ice Arena. They may even note Irish fencing’s dynasty or Notre Dame soccer’s recent runs in the

Thomas: Top 10 storylines, moments from Notre Dame’s historic season

Aidan Thomas | Saturday, June 25, 2022

The Notre Dame baseball team put together a remarkable and historic season in 2022. It ended in somewhat uncharacteristic fashion. Some mental mistakes and fielding sloppiness cost the Irish several runs. And when the Irish looked to be mounting a potential late-game comeback, they promptly struck out and grounded into a double play. And the

All hands on deck as Irish face elimination against Aggies

Aidan Thomas | Monday, June 20, 2022

For the second time this postseason, Notre Dame finds its back against the wall. Much like last time, the task ahead is a daunting one. A little over a week ago, the Irish had to beat No. 1 Tennessee on the road without either primary starting pitcher available. Now, head coach Link Jarrett’s squad must

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
