Something special about Super Bowl Sunday

Olivia Schatz | Monday, February 13, 2023

Growing up, if you asked me what my favorite day of the year was, I would always say the Super Bowl. Don’t get me wrong — I loved waking up Christmas morning to dozens of presents. I would always be the first to wake up for the yearly Easter egg hunt. But as much as

Schatz: The year of the Jaguar

Olivia Schatz | Friday, September 30, 2022

For 18 weeks, the NFL has control over American living rooms. Out of 32 teams in the league, only one gets the coveted Lombardi Trophy each year. People bet millions of dollars on the outcome of a three-and-a-half-hour game. Throughout the span of 56 Super Bowls, 12 teams have yet to take home the crown.

Thomas: The Bengals’ blueprint: What it is, and who could follow?

Aidan Thomas | Thursday, February 10, 2022

The Cincinnati Bengals stunned the world in 2022. That statement remains true regardless of the result on Sunday night. But the question is: What got missed? The Bengals were a near consensus bottom-five or at least bottom-ten team. In what felt like a loaded AFC North, Cincinnati was given barely a chance to crack the

Hayden Adams | Monday, March 2, 2020

I haven’t yet taken over as Sports Editor, but as the time approaches for me to do so, I feel compelled to send off my predecessor, Connor Mulvena, by writing a tribute sports authority to his old piece on the dumbest pro sports mascots. So without further ado, in no particular order, here are mine.

Greason: Here’s how to stop the Patriots

Elizabeth Greason | Friday, January 19, 2018

The New England Patriots are at it again— probably back to win another Super Bowl. And I’m tired of it. As a Giants fan, I’ve always had anything but love in my heart for Bill Bellichick’s gang, so this year more than ever I’ll be rooting actively for pretty much anyone else. So here are

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
