Overtime hero Drew Bavaro leads Irish into postseason

Ryan Murphy | Friday, March 3, 2023

The storied hockey rivalry between Notre Dame and Michigan has produced some iconic late-game heroics over the years. Think of Calle Ridderwall’s overtime goal that sent the upstart Irish to the 2008 national championship in Denver. Perhaps instead Jake Evans’ game-winner with 3.7 seconds left in the 2018 Frozen Four semifinal first comes to mind.

Observer Sports Staff | Thursday, October 14, 2021

Notre Dame’s influence goes well beyond the collegiate ranks in many sports, and ice hockey is no exception. Adams: Top 10 Irish sports moments of the last four years

Hayden Adams | Monday, February 15, 2021

Let’s have some fun with this nostalgic piece looking back on my Notre Dame sports experience. Sure, some more moments could occur this spring in the men’s and women’s basketball or hockey realms (or any sport for that matter) that could reshuffle this list, but for now I’m willing to put it in stone. Hayden Adams | Monday, September 21, 2020

I’ve said it a million times in Sports Authorities and columns, but I’m from Kentucky. That reason I’m bringing it up this time though is not to talk about football and basketball, but hockey. To be honest — and this may be heresy — I knew nothing about Notre Dame football before I got to

Jake Evans leaves indelible mark after leading hockey program back to the Frozen Four

Connor Mulvena | Friday, May 18, 2018

Any program looking to break through the top ranks and solidify itself as a force to be reckoned with needs key pieces. It needs a core group of leaders to elevate the team from a good program to a national powerhouse. For Notre Dame, Jake Evans was that guy. In Evans’ four-year tenure at Notre

Irish reload and return to Frozen Four

Tobias Hoonhout | Friday, May 18, 2018

After losing their two most important players from last year’s Frozen Four run and joining the Big Ten, the Irish had plenty of question marks entering the season. But after the program’s longest ever win streak, an inaugural sweep of the Big Ten regular season and playoffs and a trip to the national championship game,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
