Justin Ademilola has steadily progressed into one of Notre Dame’s best defenders

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, November 19, 2021

An athlete’s development isn’t always linear. Some players immediately burst onto the scene as superstars, making an impact from day one. Others go through ups and downs before settling in as key contributors. But there’s something to be said for a player who just keeps getting better year after year, play after play, steadily improving

Irish ready to face challenging Midshipmen triple-option attack

Nate Moller | Friday, November 5, 2021

After facing two offenses that are reliant on the pass, the Irish defense will face a different kind of test on Saturday when they go up against the triple-option attack of the Navy Midshipmen. The preparation has looked different, but senior defensive lineman Jayson Ademilola and junior linebacker J.D. Bertrand are confident that the Irish

On a brisk Saturday night in South Bend, the Fighting Irish hosted the unranked Trojans in the 92nd edition of the Notre Dame-USC rivalry. The Irish were able to get out to a fast start in the game despite not being able to draw blood on their first drive, an effort that consumed nearly 4:30

Hungry for more: Jayson Ademilola sparking Irish defensive turnaround

Aidan Thomas | Friday, October 1, 2021

When talking about the Notre Dame defensive line prior to the 2021 season, the storylines frequently, and understandably, revolved around two key returning starters — graduate students Kurt Hinish and Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa. They did not tend to focus on a senior defensive lineman from New Jersey with one career sack over three years in the

Details, details, details: Hinish cites tackles and small tweaks for Purdue success

Mannion McGinley | Friday, September 17, 2021

In his fifth and final season as a starting Notre Dame defensive lineman, Irish graduate student Kurt Hinish is one of the longest-standing pillars on Notre Dame’s defensive roster. As one of the seven captains in his final season, Hinish has taken the weight of the season directly onto his shoulders. That is at least

Key position battles and questions to watch in Irish spring game

Writing this article, I could try and offer some early preview of the Notre Dame football season, but the fact remains I know just about the same amount of information as I did on Jan. 2 — the day I was processing Notre Dame’s Rose Bowl defeat to Alabama in the College Football Playoff. Besides

Position Breakdown: Defensive Tackle

Observer Sports Staff | Friday, April 9, 2021

While Notre Dame’s defense has a few more questions than they entered 2020 with, the Fighting Irish are bolstered by a pair of their top defenders returning at defensive tackle, making the position one of the strongest on that side of the ball.  Last year, Notre Dame boasted an elite run defense, as they particularly

Position group breakdown: Defensive line

Observer Sports Staff | Thursday, April 2, 2020

Notre Dame’s 2020 defensive line will be vastly different than the 2019 unit. The Irish graduated three starters, who combined for 90 tackles and 15 sacks. The players that remain on their depth chart are talented, but it will be very difficult for the team to replace the elite level of production it got from

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
