Kicking it into high-gear: Doerer eyes successful year after clutch game-winner

Nate Moller | Friday, September 10, 2021

Graduate student Jonathan Doerer was the hero for Notre Dame last Sunday in Tallahassee by making a 41-yard field goal in overtime to give the Irish a thrilling 41-38 victory over Florida State. This year will be Doerer’s third season as the placekicker for the Irish, and he looks set to have a very successful

Observer on the Ground: FSU

Emily DeFazio | Wednesday, September 8, 2021

Tallahassee may be the state capital of Florida, but FSU is the capital of Tallahassee. From the moment we landed in Charlotte, there were hoards of passengers piling onto flights, decked out in their Seminole gear. They wanted it known: They would be there at 7:30 p.m. Sunday night, and they meant business. The small

Position Group Breakdown: Special teams unit returns athleticism and production

Observer Sports Staff | Wednesday, May 5, 2021

Special teams is a very underrated yet extremely important factor in any team’s success, as dozens of games each year hinge on field goals or PATS, kickoff returns, punt blocks, and a variety of other special teams plays. Luckily for Notre Dame, they’ll see most of their major contributors return to the special teams unit

While Ian Book was busy getting drafted in the fourth round of the NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, his Notre Dame Fighting Irish took the field for their spring game, as the Irish faithful got their first look at what the quarterback position could look like after the Book era, which ended with

From doubtful to dependable: Doerer proves vital following initial struggles

Hayden Adams | Friday, December 18, 2020

Jonathan Doerer is taking everything in stride. He’s approaching it in a similar way to how he does his on-field duties — minus the deep breaths, visualization and four twists of his arm that make up his pre-kick ritual. His time with the Irish has been a journey, one in which the current result was

Irish finish perfect regular season behind McKinley’s three touchdowns

Nate Moller | Sunday, December 6, 2020

It definitely was not a perfect performance, but No. 2-ranked Notre Dame (10-0, 9-0 ACC) was able to beat Syracuse (1-10, 1-10 ACC) by a score of 45-21 on senior day to complete a perfect regular season, the third of head coach Brian Kelly’s tenure in South Bend. Kelly talked about what Saturday’s win means

Ward: Irish special teams hanging by a thread

Jimmy Ward | Sunday, November 15, 2020

As fun as this rendition of the “Holy War” was, there is one part of this team that has concerned me all year and has once again failed to provide me much relief. Brian Polian’s special teams unit this year has been more inconsistent than any other group by far.  There have been plenty of

Geyer: True love

Ellen Geyer | Friday, November 13, 2020

They always say you never forget your first heartbreak. As someone who was a Notre Dame student in 2018, I can confirm that. I anticipated an Irish loss in the Cotton Bowl on that bitter December day, but realizing that Notre Dame was on the outside looking in was nonetheless a bitter pill to swallow.

No. 4 Irish beat No. 1 Tigers in overtime thriller for first win over top-ranked team in Kelly era

Jimmy Ward | Monday, November 9, 2020

On perhaps the most influential day in American history, Notre Dame beat a top-ranked opponent in Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers. It was the first time the Irish hosted a No. 1 ranked opponent in 15 years and the last time they got a victory over the best in the nation since 1993. The double-overtime slugfest

Notre Dame maintains undefeated record with 31-13 win over Georgia Tech

Charlotte Edmonds | Monday, November 2, 2020

In their second-straight road game, Notre Dame traveled to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech for the first time since 2015. While the Irish were the heavy favorite over the Yellow Jackets, this 31-13 victory came down to game management and discipline. On one end, the Notre Dame defense, led by graduate student defensive lineman

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
