Week 1 Notre Dame football grades: Defense and special teams get it done

Tyler Reidy | Wednesday, August 30, 2023

On Monday, we graded the Notre Dame offense and its 2023 debut in Dublin. The 42-point thrashing of Navy was met with high marks nearly all across the board. On the flip side, the Irish were up to the task against the Midshipmen’s unique offensive game plan. Limiting the opposition to just three points, which

Andrew McGuinness, Madeline Ladd, J.J. Post, Jose Sanchez Cordova, Matthew Crow and Thomas Zwiller | Friday, August 18, 2023

Another Notre Dame football season is right around the corner. The usual time to settle into campus life before the season begins is brief this year, thanks to a Week 0 trip to Dublin to take on Navy. With the number of days until kick off in Ireland down to single digits, The Observer’s football

Hartman plays like Gold, Buchner feeling Blue as Gold wins 24-0

Thomas Zwiller | Saturday, April 22, 2023

Last year’s annual Blue-Gold scrimmage game treated fans to a bright sunny day with warm temperatures. This year’s installment, however, met fans in the 40s with an on-and-off drizzle, though the damp crowd of 32,942 did not let the weather dampen their spirits. The game started with the Gold team taking possession on their own

McGuinness: Irish defense needs strong start for 2023 to be a success

Andrew McGuinness | Friday, April 21, 2023

For the third straight year, the Notre Dame football team will likely enter the season with a quarterback who has never started a game for the program. And even if graduate student Sam Hartman surprisingly does not begin the year behind center, junior Tyler Buchner does not exactly bring a wealth of starting experience to

J.J. Post | Friday, January 20, 2023

The Notre Dame defensive line loses both of their vypers from 2022 along with two of their regular defensive tackles. They’ll look to replace that production and spearhead a strong Irish defense in 2023.  2022 Summary Defensive line started out as a confounding nonfactor early on in the season for the Irish. The 2022 season is in the books for Notre Dame, punctuated by their wild 45-38 win over South Carolina in the Gator Bowl. The Irish will replace four offensive starters (five if you count the quarterback) and up to five defensive starters, depending on a few pending decisions. In particular, the defensive line loses All-American

Irish defense embraces Golden’s style of play ahead of 2022 season

Nate Moller | Friday, April 22, 2022

After an impressive season last year, there are lofty expectations for the Irish defense this season under new defensive coordinator Al Golden. With plenty of talent returning on the defensive side of the ball, the Irish have worked hard to learn Golden’s system and develop further as a unit in preparation for the 2022 season.

Position Group Breakdown: Special teams unit returns athleticism and production

Observer Sports Staff | Wednesday, May 5, 2021

Special teams is a very underrated yet extremely important factor in any team’s success, as dozens of games each year hinge on field goals or PATS, kickoff returns, punt blocks, and a variety of other special teams plays. Luckily for Notre Dame, they’ll see most of their major contributors return to the special teams unit

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
