The Tampico man

Carlos Basurto | Tuesday, September 19, 2023

I could not have been older than 13 at the time yet, to this day, beyond seven years afar, I cannot forget the Tampico man.  My family and I were bound for the golden Mexican beach of Tampico. On a gentle September evening, the temperature would begin to subside in a matter of weeks —

For joy and sorrow

Sydni Brooks | Wednesday, September 15, 2021

In the last column I wrote entitled “Who’s to Say?” I spoke about my belief that this life is a simulation, and argued that in some capacity, our lives are monitored by an ever-present being or beings. This insinuates a bit that much of our lives are decided by an outer source, which, to me

Just say no

Julianna Conley | Wednesday, August 25, 2021

Quit that club! Switch your major! Just say NO! As we start another semester and as Covid restrictions lift, a bevy of new opportunities becomes possible. Students will be flocking to activity fairs, passing out their emails more than freshman boys do their Snapchats at Domerfest and cramming their schedules tighter than Keenan boys’ pants

The cosmic joy and agony of Maggie Rogers’ ‘Heard It In A Past Life’

Carlos De Loera | Friday, February 1, 2019

Making an album is hard. Making your first album is harder. Making your first album when there has been two-and-a-half years of anticipation is even harder. It’s a lot of pressure. This is where folk-dance artist and Maryland native Maggie Rogers found herself at the start of 2019. In the summer of 2016 a video surfaced

JOMO: ‘Joy of missing out’

Fr. Joe Corpora | Monday, October 29, 2018

I had never heard the word FOMO until about a year ago. In a conversation, someone said the word FOMO and I asked what that word meant. He explained, “Fear Of Missing Out.” My immediate response was, “I like JOMO,” which I defined as the “Joy Of Missing Out.” I don’t know how young people

An inability to stop singing

Ciara Hopkinson | Monday, May 1, 2017

My mom was surprised the first time I texted her on a Sunday afternoon telling her I would not be able to have our normal hour-long Sunday night phone conversation. I hadn’t just lost my voice like your average person loses her voice; I was actually unable to speak. I couldn’t make a sound louder

First share my joy, then my pain

Rebecca Feng | Friday, February 24, 2017

That winter, Fr. John Jenkins refused to declare Notre Dame a sanctuary campus; this winter, the cheers of the hockey game were echoing in my bones; that winter, Trump attempted the travel ban and millions of immigrants’ dreams were shattered inside their own already weak stomach; this winter, he and I spent hours during dinner

Reflecting on our blessings

Natalie Weber | Thursday, February 23, 2017

I have been advised — on multiple occasions — to write down three positive things that happened to me each day. Supposedly, this practice would help me to increase my ability to engage in positive thinking. However, I always thought it sounded like tacky advice pulled from a cheap self-help book and never bothered to

Experimenting with joy

Matthew Williams | Thursday, February 16, 2017

Of all the existential questions to get tossed around on Friday nights or over coffee on Saturday mornings, my all-time favorites are those considering the point of human life. They usually begin as raw why questions about our existence, which get mixed into questions of how to live a “meaningful”  life, before finally rising into

Find joy in change

Jack Rooney | Friday, May 13, 2016

A lot can change in four years. When I first arrived at Notre Dame four years ago, my dad, like many other fathers, helped me move into my new dorm. He carried boxes, lofted beds and sweated along with the rest of the class of 2016 and their parents as we began our time at

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
