Super Bowl LVII preview: Chiefs vs. Eagles

Andrew McGuinness | Wednesday, February 1, 2023

In some ways, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles are in similar spots. Both teams, after years of suffering, are looking for their second Super Bowl in their last five years. Both have a superstar player with the last name Kelce. They are led by a do-it-all quarterback with gobs of talent and playoff

Aidan Thomas | Thursday, February 3, 2022

The NFL playoffs got off to a slightly slow start in 2022. However, after a largely underwhelming opening weekend, things picked up in a big way. Here’s a quick ranking of the 12 games to take place so far in this postseason. 12. Los Angeles Rams 34, Arizona Cardinals 11 This one was pretty boring

Kalemkerian: NFL divisional round predictions

John Kalemkerian | Tuesday, January 18, 2022

Continuing the trend of a great NFL season, Super Wild Card weekend gave us some great results and matchups to look forward to, although three blowouts marginally dulled the hype. From many fans’ perspectives (including this Giants fan), the Saturday and Sunday outcomes were about as good as could be hoped for, with the hated

Zwiller: NFL Week Nine Reactions

Thomas Zwiller | Tuesday, November 9, 2021

I pride myself on having a relatively good understanding of the NFL. I document weekly picks on my live stream NFL Kickoff.  If I were to begin gambling I would not make a whole lot of money, but my record of 76-46 would be at home on ESPN’s Expert Picks page. But this last weekend? Well, I went

Zwiller: Week Five Overreactions

Thomas Zwiller | Tuesday, October 12, 2021

Let’s overreact to NFL Week Five… Carolina Panthers Claim: Sam Darnold is broken. He looked like a new quarterback through the first three weeks of the season, prompting David Newton to write an article called “Carolina Panthers successfully exorcising Sam Darnold’s ghosts from NY Jets.” However, in weeks four and five, Darnold threw a combined six

Zwiller: From Division champs to 1-2

Thomas Zwiller | Wednesday, September 29, 2021

At the start of the season, had you told me that the Jacksonville Jaguars would be 0-3, I would have believed you. I would not have believed you if you told me the Kansas City Chiefs went 1-2 in their first three games.  The Chiefs are not the only surprise of the season, of course.

If you read my column predicting the entire NFL season and Super Bowl champion (the LA Rams), you will remember the ZLO Model algorithm, my NFL model I use to make predictions about the NFL season. A new flood of information has come with the season, and I have been updating the Model accordingly, and

Zwiller: Let’s overreact 2.0

Thomas Zwiller | Monday, September 20, 2021

Last week I wrote about the crazy opening weekend: The Titans’ crazy game against the Cardinals, the Browns’ great showing against the Chiefs, the Saints rolling the Packers and the Steelers locking down the Bills.  I think I did pretty well. The Titans’ offense bounced back against the Seattle Seahawks, and the Browns seem to

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
