Jim Moster | Tuesday, February 16, 2021

It’s the spring of 2011. In the suburbs of Chicago, a group of awkward fifth graders practice a dance routine. On the other side of the country, in Irvine, California,

Pop hits and college kids

Kathy Minko | Tuesday, August 25, 2015

’Tis the season for school, parties, chilly weather and — as always — music. Throughout the year, college students of all ages, backgrounds and music interests experience similar cycles of angst and leisure. Have you ever wondered how our diverse student body could possibly relate to one another? Fortunately, my glamorous summer job of ice cream

Keep the sharks dancing — and swimming

Erin McAuliffe | Wednesday, February 4, 2015

Whether you watched the Super Bowl or not, you have seen the dancing sharks from the halftime show. These dancing sharks are a game changer. You may think, “What’s the big deal about a couple of cute, friendly, dancing sharks?” The big deal is that statement. Sharks have the reputation of bloodthirsty killers, and they are

Superbowl Sunday party gameplan

Maddie Daly | Thursday, January 29, 2015

Calling all football, food and February fans: this Sunday is Super Bowl XLIX as well as Feb. 1, so we have double the reason to celebrate (or mourn for second-semester seniors like me who are just that much closer to graduation). This year, the Seattle Seahawks and (controversial) New England Patriots will go head to

Stop Pop Stars

Matthew Munhall | Monday, April 28, 2014

Dear pop stars of the world, why does this keep happening? It has been a decade since Gwen Stefani’s use of the Harajuku Girls, her Japanese and Japanese-American backup dancers, was widely perceived as fetishizing Asian women. Just last year, the discourse surrounding Miley Cyrus’s use of black women as props in her “We

When the 2017 “Wonder Woman” film was released When the 2017 “Wonder Woman” film was released, many found the film exceptional, filled with female empowerment and inclusivity of women in Hollywood. It made me wonder if they saw the same movie I had watched, where a strong independent woman suddenly meets a man and willingly follows his every order, even though she’s a grade A baddie all on her own.

ICYMI: Saint Mary’s to require COVID-19 vaccinat ICYMI: Saint Mary’s to require COVID-19 vaccination for student enrollment in 2021-2022 academic year

College President Katie Conboy announced in a Monday email that all students are required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine for the upcoming academic year. The vaccine will be added to the list of mandatory student immunizations beginning in the 2021-2022 term.

“There is so much yet to learn about the COVID-19 virus, and while we are encouraged by the progress made thus far, we still see areas for concern; in particular the variant strains and what they could bring,” Conboy said. “For this reason, among others, we are making the bold choice to mandate student vaccines.”

According to Conboy, the College will offer exemption to the vaccine policy for proper medical and religious reasons.

In the wake of the University’s announcement of In the wake of the University’s announcement of Zahm House’s disbandment, The Observer began an investigation into the dorm’s so-called “troubling culture.”

The investigation revealed several incidents contributing to the administration’s decision, including Zahm residents’ disregard for and plans to alter COVID-19 tests as well as vandalism within and beyond the walls of the hall.

The Observer also obtained a series of email chains sent between roughly 200 Zahm residents from 2019-2020, in which students shared graphic and misogynistic jokes regarding sex and sexual assault.

Read more about COVID-19 cases and plans to alter results, annual vandalism costs, the disputed culture of the dorm, the Zahm residents’ take on the dorm’s closure and what the final decision means for Notre Dame residential life on The Observer’s website.
