The best of Drake

Ryan Israel | Monday, March 30, 2020

Drake is the most ubiquitous, influential and popular music artist of the past decade. Drake is The Beatles. He has plenty of flaws — Google ghostwriters, hiding a child and more — and some really not great music. He’s also had some stellar feature appearances, outstanding songs and a few good albums. To stir up

In the age of streaming

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, December 4, 2019

A lot — and I mean a lot — of good music was released in the 2010s. Genres were blended, stars were born and social media gave us all an up-close view of the action. But the decade also saw a massive shift in the way we consume music. With the rise of services such

Straight fire: Rap’s best new releases

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, October 9, 2019

2019 has been a strange year for rap music. Drake and Kendrick Lamar, two of the genre’s most prevalent artists, have yet to release any new music. Kanye West’s recent “Jesus Is King” debacle has garnered plenty of attention but has yet to yield any actual music. So instead of the usual players dominating the

Watch Travis Scott fly

Ryan Israel | Friday, September 6, 2019

To “go sicko mode” is to go off, to go crazy, to reach a level of performance, excitement, joy or fanaticism that could be defined as “sicko” — the definition is fairly open. In “Look Mom I Can Fly,” the new Travis Scott documentary on Netflix, Travis goes “sicko mode” when first playing Drake’s contribution

Today’s music is terrible

Hayden Adams | Monday, April 1, 2019

Music is terrible nowadays. The music industry has been saturated with artists who pander to the masses with stupid “songs” with little-to-no substance. I miss the days when most artists could play an instrument, write and compose their own songs and sing it. I don’t want to be misunderstood. I enjoy some of today’s music,

The new voice in R&B: Zacari

Ryan Israel | Tuesday, March 26, 2019

The impact of Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.” cannot be understated. The 2017 album spawned two hit singles — the brutal “DNA.” and the catchy “HUMBLE.” —  featuring the most iconic cover art of the last decade — which will be recreated for years to come — and won the Pulitzer Prize for music, becoming the first

2 Chainz shoots his shot on ‘Rap or Go to the League’

Ryan Israel | Wednesday, March 20, 2019

“We’re gonna introduce now the North Clayton Eagles / Coached by James Gwynn / His starters, number 21, Tauheed Epps.” The announcer’s voice cuts out, but you can watch, or just imagine, the rest. A tall, lanky high school kid strides past his teammates — receiving high fives as he goes — then shakes hands

In an excellent start to Black History Month, Disney is bringing “Black Panther” back to select theaters for free. From Feb. 1 through Feb. 7, you can watch “Black Panther” for free at AMC South Bend 16. After garnering over $1.3 billion in the international box office, “Black Panther” is on its way to taking

Kendrick and company blend together on ‘Black Panther: The Album’

Ryan Israel | Friday, February 16, 2018

“King of my city, king of my country, king of my homeland,” utters Kendrick Lamar over a simple piano riff. Taken out of context, this statement from Lamar seems conceited, narcissistic and very far from “HUMBLE.” However, to gain a deeper understanding of Lamar’s words, one has to merely look to the title of the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
