Irish slowed by ACC opponents

Ryan Klaus | Friday, May 15, 2015

Notre Dame got off to a fast start this season, winning six of its first seven matches. However, as the Irish began their ACC slate, wins became harder to come by. “I think clearly there’s been a lot of growth from a lot of individuals throughout this year,” Irish head coach Ryan Sachire said. “We’ve

Carson: Charging to conclusions

Alex Carson | Thursday, April 9, 2015

I’ve got to admit, it was pretty funny. All year long we had to put up with the complaints about college basketball; the pace of play, the physicality, the low-scoring games, the one-and-done players. A term I heard a lot? “Unwatchable.” But then a funny thing happened on the way to doomsday. On March 28, Notre Dame

Klonsinski: What just happened?

Zach Klonsinski | Wednesday, April 8, 2015

To be honest, I’m still trying to process everything that happened at the Final Four this weekend. And I’m not talking about wins and losses. In reality, the games were the side show at times, especially Saturday night. It started off innocently enough as eventual national champion Duke trounced Michigan State. Mike Krzyzewski and Tom

Notre Dame loses to Kentucky in Elite Eight

Mike Monaco | Sunday, March 29, 2015

CLEVELAND — Jerian Grant sprinted to the left corner of the court and heaved up a contested shot. It missed long. The horn blared. Notre Dame fell — two points, mere inches, precious seconds — from a momentous victory, as No. 1 seed and undefeated Kentucky survived the No. 3 seed Irish, 68-66, in the

Grant, Connaughton close out careers

Brian Hartnett | Sunday, March 29, 2015

CLEVELAND — Trailing Kentucky by two points with six seconds remaining in Saturday’s Midwest regional final at Quicken Loans Arena, Notre Dame gave the ball to its two seniors, guards Jerian Grant and Pat Connaughton. Just as he had done so often, Connaughton inbounded the ball to Grant. Just as he had done so often,

Notre Dame prepares for an Elite Eight matchup with No. 1 Kentucky

Brian Hartnett | Saturday, March 28, 2015

Notre Dame is no stranger to tough competition. The Irish (32-5) own an 8-1 record against teams that reached the Sweet 16 and have wins over three teams already moving on to the Elite Eight. But for the No. 3 seed Irish to win the Midwest Regional tonight and advance to their first Final Four since

A tweet to action

When your team plays for something as big as the conference championship, blood starts to boil over. Temperatures start to flare and pride starts to take over as fans become part of their team, part of the game. Nowadays especially, we take to the Twitter-sphere to live-tweet our support to our team as well as

Monaco: Irish still have more to prove

Mike Monaco | Thursday, March 19, 2015

It’s there. Underneath the sliced-up nets still hanging around the necks of Jerian Grant and Pat Connaughton and knotted along the back of Bonzie Colson’s championship hat. It’s there. Underneath the Purcell Pavilion rafters from which an ACC championship banner will soon hang. It’s there. Underneath the still-lingering giddiness from a weekend’s triumph in Greensboro,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
